    About Maria S.

The term leadership is usually defined as “the action of leading a group of people or an organization.” I define leadership as a process in which an individual helps others succeed and achieve a common goal. Success is attained through unity and cooperation with one another. A person who leads a person or group of people into the path of achievement is a good leader. A leader, who expresses positive attitude, is able to direct others successfully to reach a unified goal. He or she stands up for his or her own cause while motivating others to succeed. I view myself as a leader. Helping others and being an active member in my community are really important tasks to me. Throughout my freshman and sophomore years in Woodrow Wilson High School (2013-2014 and 2014-2016), I volunteered at the Washington National Cathedral tutoring students ages 5-12. Then, in the summer of 2015, I volunteered at the Boys and Girls Club of a Greater Washington. Both of these experiences were wonderful and enjoyable. I gained useful skills that I could apply to my life in the future,( patience, problem solving, communication, time management, leadership skills). It is my belief that something is not understood until it is fully and clearly explained. Every time I presented a lesson, I tried to present it in a way relatable to each individual student. My own understanding increased from helping to ease students of their confusions in Mathematical, Historical, or Scientific topics, to reading books and giving group lectures about them, my experiences as a tutor have increased my ability to explain and teach. Taking care of children has always been one of my major passions. Watching children grow, explore and learn has been a rewarding experience that excites me. Their imagination, innocence and creativity are highly enjoyable. Teaching them through art, reading, and outdoor observations offers them the knowledge that they may need in school and later life as they grow up. Every time I nurture a child's interests, I help him or her become a better, brighter person who respects his or herself. Content knowledge: First of all, it is necessary to obviously, be good at math and have a good understanding of it in order to be a good tutor. I usually borrow the student's mathematical text book before I tutor them to refresh their memory of the lessons and brush up on their own skills.
