Hello! My name is Maria and I love fashion! I have been in the clothing and fashion industry for 20 years. My knowledge of sewing and construction is vast. I have taught since 2010 and love sharing my skills with students who have an interest in sewing and/or fashion. A little bit about my education: I graduated from NYU with an undergrad degree in History, received an associates degree from Sotheby's in London for 19th and 20th century decorative arts, received an associates degree from the Louise Salinger Academy of Fashion in San Francisco in pattern making and design. Presently, I am an owner/designer of a company called Calliope. We have been making fashion accessories which are all produced in Oakland for the last eight years. Have a look at some of my designs for sale. You can have a look at my latest pieces on my website, search for thisiscalliope.com I would love the opportunity to share and teach what I have learned over the years. I am a good listener and have clear communication in an easy and relaxed setting. I care deeply about the environment, especially the animals and my business and life reflect that passion. All of the products I create are vegan and our fabrics are thoughtfully sourced so as to leave as little "footprint" as possible. I care about putting beautiful and thoughtful products into the marketplace.

Maria was so helpful! She was able to teach me the basics of my sewing machine even though she had not used that type before. I could tell just by talking to her how knowledgeable and passionate she is about her craft. I plan to definitely have more lessons with her in the future. Thanks again! :)

Maria is a fantastic pattern maker and sewing teacher! She was able to make a pattern out of my existing garment without taking it apart and walked me through all the steps of re-creating the item. Not only is she very knowledgable, she is also a great teacher and was able to explain things to me so I could retain them and practice on my own. I was completely new to sewing and she patiently answered all my questions and made sure I was comfortable with the different stitches. She also taught me how to setup and use my new sewing machine! Maria is a very down to earth and easy going person; it was really fun chatting during our lessons. I will definitely be back for more lessons!
