    About Margaurita S.

    (1)
Margaurita’s approach to teaching is that art is a universal language, open to anyone interested in expressing themselves through creative exploration. She utilizes a mix of teaching philosophies depending on the needs of her students. She has studied a range of educational theories, including Reggio Emilia, Montessori, and Differentiated Learning, among others, and chooses parts of each to incorporate into her teaching style. She believes in teaching towards an appreciation of art and an understanding of the creative process more than a focus on the end product. Because of this, she integrates art history and art criticism into most every art lesson. Margaurita holds a BFA in Painting and Art Education with a double minor in Art History and Creative Writing. She is licensed to teach Visual Art in Massachusetts for grades pre-k to 12 and has been sharing her love of art and learning with students for over fifteen years.

    Self Employed

Continued participation as a visiting artist in a variety of learning environments, including Saint Mary’s Star of the Sea School, Beverly, MA; Hamilton-Wenham Public Library, Wenham, MA; Wenham Museum, Wenham, MA; Bell School, Marblehead, MA; Glen Urquhart School, Beverly, MA; and with the North Shore Art Teachers Association.

    Long Term Substitute Teacher

    Jan, 2010 - Jun, 2013

    Kelly Services

Worked in an on-call capacity to fill in for teachers in all subjects from Pre-k to Grade 12. Exceeded expectations of a typical substitute teacher by stepping into a variety of situations where no pre-planned lessons were available and I had to quickly develop curriculum for instruction. Restructured classroom management goals in situations where students had been without a regular classroom teacher for a short length of time. Completed long-term assignments for Thorpe Elementary School, Smith Elementary School and Highlands Elementary School where I assumed full responsibility of the art classrooms, developed appropriate curriculum, provided support to classroom teachers, and arranged school art displays. Most recently completed a long-term art assignment at Marblehead High School where I implemented lessons and units of study of my own design, maintained grading, and set up student art displays.

    Sep, 2009 - Dec, 2009

    Ivan G. Smith Elementary School

Assumed full teaching responsibility in a K - 5 art room servicing a school of over 300 students. Planned and implemented a thorough visual arts curriculum in alignment with the Massachusetts Arts Curriculum Frameworks. Modified lessons to suit the specific needs of students with learning plans. Assisted supervising teacher with the development and use of assessments. Encouraged students to further their understanding or art creation through the use of peer and group critiques. Developed integrated lessons, working with classroom teachers to align with mathematics, literacy, history, science, and music. Collaborated with a core group of teachers and specialists to review MCAS data and implement curriculum to improve student achievement. Chaperoned student field trips. Initiated community outreach by combining a food drive with a lesson in Pop Art. Corresponded with parents on a regular basis. Organized end of term art exhibit showcasing artwork from each student even though most practicum exhibits only select a few representative works of a small percentage of the student population.

Designed a customized art curriculum addressing projects/subjects such as stained glass design, medieval art, large-scale paper mache sculpture, collograph printing, bookmaking, and the history of propaganda. Developed lessons that classroom teachers could follow independently to enhance their regular instruction. Cut materials costs by utilizing non-traditional and recycled materials in many projects. Worked with students to present artwork and personal artist reflections to the community through displays and oral presentations.
