I have been teaching violin for about 4 years and playing for over 25. Due to COVID, I switched to Zoom lessons, and it has been surprisingly awesome! Anything I teach in person translates to Zoom, and this makes learning the violin more accessible than ever. I teach using the Suzuki Method and See Saw exercise books. I love to teach students of any age - adults and kids. For younger students, I recommend a parent be present to help with lesson setup and note-taking. You're welcome to sit in on the whole lesson or just the first and last 5 minutes or so. Also, I love introducing students to alternative styles of violin. Want to learn how to play in a rock band? I can help! Want to play by ear and jam? We can do that too! No matter your end goal, we'll work on posture and playing technique to help you achieve a beautiful sound and comfortable playing. We'll also work on basic music theory and note-reading. I have an MFA in Graphic Design from Iowa State, so in addition to teaching violin, I also teach design! I love to combine the two whenever I can. I perform under a music project I call Starlight Therapy, where I improvise violin over tracks I compose while standing behind a projection screen that displays visuals that react to the sound. I also love to play with local bands, and work as a studio musician as well, adding violin tracks to albums. Try looking up keelatheband on soundcloud to hear an example of the music I write and play on the violin.

Maggie gave me violin lessons way back when I was in high school, and when I decided to pick up my violin again as an adult, Maggie was the first person I thought of to call. I don't know where I would be as a student without Maggie's patient, consistent, and thoughtful teaching style. I have ADHD and carry a lot of insecurities from childhood about my ability to stick with an instrument, and Maggie meets me where I am every single time. Maggie listens to my goals with the instrument and tailors lesson plans and teaching styles to my specific needs. 10/10 would lesson again -- especially for students that are daunted by the process of learning an instrument or who will benefit from a compassionate, trauma-informed educator who has experience working with neurodivergent students.

Maggie is an excellent teacher! Super patient and great at breaking things down into parts that are easy to pick up and remember. I'm often a very frustrated learner, but Maggie has been amazing about encouraging at the exact moment it's needed (often before I even fully realise I need it!). Starting to learn violin as an adult was daunting, but something I had wanted to do since I was young, but it hasn't been the impossible task I thought it would be -- and that's definitely due to having engaging instruction that makes learning both challenging and fun!
