    About Magen H.

I studied American Sign Language (ASL) in college during my bachelor’s, master’s, and PhD coursework. As a nationally certified ASL interpreter through the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf, I have nine years of interpreting experience and hold two certifications (i.e., national and legal). I have a deep understanding of ASL and Deaf culture and can seamlessly translate from target sign language to written English using proper grammatical elements, vocabulary, and colloquialisms. I’m proficient in interpretation, both signing and voicing, simultaneous and consecutive, using a variety of modes of communication, including ASL, Pidgin Signed English or Contact Sign, Signed Exact English, Oral Transliteration, and Tactile for Deaf-Blind. I taught ASL 1 in the education department at a university in Washington, D.C. In the ASL course, I introduced the basics of ASL to undergraduate students with little or no previous knowledge of ASL through immersion; teaching completely in ASL. I taught ASL grammar, vocabulary, classifiers, non-manual signals, Deaf Culture, and the Deaf community. The class was in-person, and I incorporated receptive and expressive language activities through active participation.

I've had 3 beginner lessons with Magen thus far via online, and I must say she is incredible. I'm impressed with her knowledge of and experience with ASL and other variations of sign language and the deaf culture in general. She is organized, professional, very personable, and makes the learning process fun. She makes you feel like you can do it! I especially like the resources she provides for practice and learning about the deaf culture. I highly recommend her.

Signing these last few months with Magen has been amazing! I have loved every minute I spent with her through zoom. She does an amazing job at giving you a lot of tools and resources to grow your knowledge outside of what she teaches you. She is very receptive to how you as an individual learn which is super great and makes the lesson feel that much more personable. Magen has made me even more passionate to pursue learning sign language. She has also set me up to be successful because of the amazing teacher she is. Thank you so much Magen, and to anyone looking to learn ASL, Magen is the best teacher around!!
