Everyone comes to the cello for something different. It is my biggest goal as a teacher to shape a course of study that fits each student's interests and aspirations with the instrument. I have experience in a broad variety of teaching: beginner students of all ages, students exploring a hobby, and young advanced students aspiring to careers in music.

About Lucas B.

Lucas teaches and performs in the Hudson Valley in upstate New York. He teaches advanced high school students as assistant faculty at Stringwood Chamber Music Festival in Minnesota and has previously taught students of all ages at Eastman Community Music School in Rochester, NY.

Lucas is currently a member of The Orchestra Now in residence at Bard College, performing regularly at Bard’s Fisher Center and in New York City at Carnegie Hall, Jazz at Lincoln Center, and the Metropolitan Museum. In October Lucas Button performed as soloist in Strauss’s Don Quixote with The Orchestra Now at the Metropolitan Museum and last season Shostakovich’s Cello Concerto No. 1 with the Catskill Symphony in Oneonta, NY. He has also performed as an orchestral musician with Symphoria, the New World Symphony, and Tanglewood Music Center Orchestra. He performs a broad variety of chamber music, including performances with Society for New Music in Syracuse, Steve Reich’s Triple Quartet with the JACK Quartet, and the premier of Nico Muhly’s “Clip” at Tanglewood.

He earned his Master’s degree from the Eastman School of Music and Bachelor’s degree from the Shepherd School of Music at Rice University. Lucas received the Samuel Hayes Memorial Cello Award from the Tanglewood Music Center and the Celentano Award for Excellence in Chamber Music from the Eastman School of Music. His cello mentors include Steven Doane, Rosemary Elliott, and Norman Fischer and he has studied chamber music with members of the Concord, Chiara, Juilliard, and Ying quartets. Apart from music, Lucas loves to explore the outdoors and enjoys roasting coffee at home.

Lucas is a highly trained and highly gifted cellist and teacher. As someone who has taught alongside him, I can say first hand that he has an incredible ability to connect with students and inspire them to do their best. His love of music is infectious, and he is constantly coming up with new ideas to help his students understand difficult concepts. I cannot recommend Lucas enough as a teacher, cellist and person!

Lucas is a very patient, kind-hearted mentor to all his students. As part of the Stringwood Chamber Music Festival Assistant Faculty, Lucas has experience teaching a wide age and experience range of cellists and chamber groups, from early middle school to collegiate level. Lucas is able to thoroughly address complex musical and technical issues in a nurturing, understanding environment. It has been a privilege to witness Lucas' passion for music engage and excite the students to dive deeper into the repertoire and ignite their motivation to challenge themselves to the next level of musicianship. I highly recommend Lucas as your next cello and chamber music teacher.

Lucas is among the finest teachers I've worked with. As a colleague of his at a yearly summer music festival, I've seen him teach privately and coach chamber music. The ability to communicate effectively and precisely but also passionately and positively is rare, and Lucas makes use of it always. He's an outstanding teacher on a technical, musical, intellectual, and mentor level. Can't recommend him highly enough.

Lucas is a versatile, sensitive, and technically accomplished musician! He is a favorite collaborator of professionals, whether he is serving as Principal of the Tanglewood Orchestra, Orchestra Now, or as a member of the Symphoria cello section in Syracuse. He is an inspired, voracious, and astute musician, capable of making sense of any style or period. Anyone who works with him will benefit from his colleagial approach and his serious mastery of our artform.

Lucas is a wonderful teacher with a kind heart. His curious and thoughtful mind allows him to explore music with his students, and his enthusiasm for the subject is infectious! You or your child will be in very capable hands. I know Lucas through a chamber music program that we both teach at and I can attest that the students love him. He is a great mentor and a wonderful educator.

Lucas is a colleague of mine in The Orchestra Now, who I've known for two years. He is incredibly thoughtful and kind, and is an inspiring musician. I have witnessed him curate and present beautiful chamber recitals, perform solo with orchestra, and play brilliantly for some of the world's most esteemed cellists. If you want to learn, discover, and explore the wonderful world of the cello, Lucas is the best person!
