A student’s learning experience should be fun, exciting and inspiring, as well as stimulating and challenging. Over the years, I have come to realize that all students respond differently to concepts and materials presented in studio or class, depending on their backgrounds, interests, and learning styles. Prior knowledge has a significant effect on a student’s perception of new information, and therefore, instruction should be flexible and uniquely tailored to address each student’s needs, goals, strengths, and weaknesses. 

In teaching the vocal technique, I frequently utilize my science background in my teaching, especially when explaining scientific concepts such as the acoustics of sound and its relation to singing; however, I also acknowledge the fact that some students respond much better to other teaching methods. I always aim to be well-equipped to present the information through multiple approaches and tools, which include imagery and metaphors.

I firmly believe that constructive feedback accelerates the learning process. Through creating a positive, energetic atmosphere, and establishing a safe, friendly environment, I aspire to encourage students to ask questions, share their thoughts and feelings in their learning process, and to exercise their creativity. These explorations are as crucial for the discovery of one’s voice as they are for the development of self-confidence and artistic expression.

Turkish mezzo-soprano Lori Şen is known for her versatility in many vocal genres, including opera, art song, musical theatre, and jazz, as well as for her teaching and research interests in vocal literature, voice pedagogy, and voice science.
