Take songwriting lessons from a professional songwriter and discover how to write catchy, melodious lyrics

I have been teaching and coaching songwriters & composers for 15 years, and I am equally confident working with young beginners to experienced and skilled composers. I have trained in composition at Harvard, NYU Tisch School of the Arts and the CUNY Graduate Center and my work has been performed at NYC venues such as Merkin Concert Hall at Kaufman Music Center, Joe’s Pub, Galapagos Art Space, and the Bruno Walter Auditorium at Lincoln Center. I will tailor our lessons to your goals and musical abilities, and encourage you to share with me examples of music that you like to listen to that inspires you to compose. I will teach you how to notate your compositions using software or we'll use software you are already working with. For beginners, we'll start out with structured exercises to help you explore rhythm, pitch, and structure. For more experienced composers, I will work with you within your own aesthetic vision to provide compositional tools that you are seeking and to challenge you to stretch your musical creativity.

I am a professional music educator with 15 years of experience teaching piano, choir and voice, music theory, and composition. I have worked as a full-time music teacher at independent schools and international schools in New York City, India and Mozambique. I have a bachelor's degree in music with honors from Harvard University and a Master of Fine Arts in musical theatre writing from Tisch School of the Arts at NYU. I am also the founder and executive director of a small non-profit organization, Far Corners Community Musical Theatre, which provides opportunities in the performing arts to youth in underserved communities internationally. - I specialize in working with pre-teens, teens and young adults, with and without previous musical training. - I emphasize learning musical communication and expressivity, not just technique. - I have a lot of experience working with teens who have followed a non-traditional path to learning the piano, using youtube videos or apps. These students often learn well by ear and their skill with their fingers is far ahead of their skill at reading music. - I am passionate about music literacy and I have a modern and ever-evolving approach towards it. I teach a practical approach to reading music and I often use apps and online tools to support learning to read - I have tried and tested many and I know the best ones out there for different purposes. - I am highly flexible in the selection of repertoire, and I teach my students how to find and select their own repertoire.

I met Lisa while she was teaching Music at the American International School of Mozambique. She taught me for two enriching years and, since then, has continued to be influential in my musical career. When we first met, she was enthusiastic, encouraging, and – most importantly – filled with musical excitement. Under her, I studied the flute (starting as a complete beginner) and I had, within a short time, become a proud flutist. With her encouragement, I continued to study music with the unique opportunity to work with her one-on-one in pursuing an IB Music course. We studied not only the flute but all explored all aspects of music across cultures. While it was a heavy course load, she made the material engaging and interesting so that the work felt effortless and fun. Lisa has a passion for music that I have yet to find in another teacher. Her unique teaching engages students and challenges them to discover on their own terms. Using games, flashcards, songs, and tapping into student creativity, she introduced and guided me through the complex world of music. I can say without a doubt that she is the reason I still love to play the flute! I would recommend Lisa to any student: especially for students who are struggling to find their musical niche. Her passion spills over into everything that she does and makes any activity (be it practicing or performing) engaging, educational, and fun. Best of luck on your musical journey!
