I have being taking English classes since I was 6 years old, all the way to the second year of college. It ranged from the basics, of course, to grammar, phrases, and literature. Some of the requirements for graduation were to write poems, essays and opinions on novels or scripts and the history of literature in the United States, Spain and Puerto Rico. I hold a Bachelor's degree in Political Science with minors in French, Spanish and English. I have been teaching English as a second language (ESL) for over 2 years now. It started with a friend and fellow teacher's request to teach 2 Spanish-speaking small business owners which wanted to speak English fluently to communicate with their customers. They are the ones who have inspired me to add this subject here at WyzAnt to give others the opportunity to learn with me. They were very satisfied and are doing better in their businesses. What they like the most about my lessons is that I don't teach using boring grammar, verb conjugation and other ineffective school methods. I add to their vocabulary, follow a dialog-based English-teaching method, emphasize conversation over writing and I especially explain to them, in Spanish, the origin and meaning of the many American phrases. They constantly hear these phrases and understand the words, but not the meaning. We use lots of phrases in the USA and not knowing them is knowing only half of the language and not understanding important parts of the culture. I also tell them and explain parts of the culture they have questions about. A Spanish immigrant's point of view is very different from other culture's views. I know it because I am from that culture too, but I am also part of this one. Having said that, I am more than willing to teach folks from other cultures and languages, such a Russian. Main reason I emphasize teaching Spanish speakers is that I also speak the language. Hope to hear from you!

Doing what I love: teaching, training, interacting with people. I retired from the army after 28 years of active and reserve military service, so now I have time to do privately what I did for the army for so many years: teach and train people. For many years I presented seminars in Spanish and English in Central and South America as well as the Caribbean on many subjects to adults of all ranks. I am a Florida State Certified Spanish teacher. My Bachelor's degree is in Political Science from the University of Puerto Rico, and I hold minors in History and French. I am (since 1993) a financial adviser (stock broker, RIA) and a licensed insurance agent, which is my other passion and area of expertise. This tutoring for me is not a job; it is a passion, just another way I do what I love - teaching, advising and interacting with people. If this sounds like what you want, hope to hear from you soon.Show More

I appreciate Leonardo's patience and expertise. I would definitely recommend him to anyone looking for a Spanish tutor.
First lesson with my daughter was great. She reported it as very helpful and Leonardo was very friendly and funny.
I have always had trouble with Spanish, I have been trying to learn how to speak it for 7 years on and off but I am making huge leaps in this language thanks to Leonardo. Leonardo is excellent at teaching, he will push you to do better and give you practical assignments. Most importantly Leonardo is patient, I mess up all the time and mispronounce words quite often. Leonardo loves to teach and he doesn't keep his eye glued on the clock, He will stay with you until you understand the material. I can tell that he is great at teaching since he has been doing this for a long time. Leonardo can sense when you are bored or stressed and he will switched the exercise and make it enjoyable. The hardest part of his lessons is saying bye at the end, other then that each minute is enjoyable. Take him and you will go far, probably farther then you expected.Show More

Leonardo is very personable, flexible, knowledgeable and fun to work with. He explains the etymology of some of the words I am learning and that helps me remember their meanings more quickly.

Lt. Colonel Rivera is the best instructor/tutor I have encountered in my four years of college grade academia. His mastery of finance and military history/philosophy has had a direct positive impact on my career path and education level that cannot be overstated. Lt. Colonel Rivera will be the wisest instructor you'll have the honor of learning under. He will turn your failing grades in mid semester to 90%+ final grades with the work ethic and educational adaptability found only in higher level military education. You -will- become a better human being just by conversing with him. His leadership has that impact upon everyone he encounters. With his educational tenacity and understanding of the material, your grades will improve and exceed your wildest expectations. I speak from experience as my failing grade in finance became a 91% and my other classes rose from 83s and 86s to 95s and 97s. You hire this tutor and you get not only that but a mentor and role model. Consider Lt. Colonel Rivera as a instructor if you're serious about your immediate and continued success in academics, life, and career choice.Show More
