My student centered approach is inspired by engaging with a healthy technique (e.g. natural body movements of the hand, arm, and foot), musicianship (e..g. music vocabulary), and music theory (e.g. note naming, rhythm through chord identification etc..) Students will be able to explore repertoire ranging from European classical to American contemporary repertoire (e.g. jazz, gospel, pop etc...) Musical activities will enhance the lesson in our pursuit of developing your musical reading, piano technique, and personal voice!

About Leonard H.

Hi! I'm Leonard Hayes, I love the piano and I'd like the opportunity to share that love with you!

Currently, I'm based in Los Angeles pursuing doctoral studies at the USC Flora L. Thornton School of Music. I hold performance degrees from the Eastman School of Music (M.M) and Lawrence University (B.M.). Also, I received a high school diploma from the prestigious Interlochen Arts Academy.

I love teaching!

During my short tenure as a classroom teacher at the Booker T. Washington High School (Dallas, TX) - former students were accepted into undergraduate music programs at University of Memphis, Berklee College of Music, SMU, TCU, and UT Austin among others. In 2017, I received the distinction as a Steinway & Sons Educational Partner; and received the Steinway’s prestigious 2017 Top Teacher Award for his commitment to piano education in the Dallas community.

Thank you for reading through my profile and thank you for considering me as your teacher!

Mr. Hayes has been my favorite piano teacher so far (and he was my 7th piano teacher!). He taught me to really understand classical piano music and helped me to find my own voice and expression. Under his tutelage was when I really began to understand the depth and detail and most importantly how to really bring life and personality to even the simplest of music. My technique also improved vastly as Mr. Hayes is very detailed and disciplined when it came to breaking bad habits and using as much of your body to enhance and take control over your playing. Being Mr. Hayes’ student was life changing and a huge turnaround in my piano career, so I unequivocally absolutely positively recommend him to be your teacher.

Leonard Hayes is hands down the best teacher I have ever met. I have had trouble playing without pain for the 4 years that I have been trying to learn the piano, and Leonard is the only teacher that has helped me learn healthy techniques for playing expressively on the piano. In addition, he is kind, patient, and understanding, no matter what. I heartily recommend him for any level of student, whether you’re an expert or an eternal beginner like me.

Leonard Hayes is a world class instructor and performer! His understanding of piano pedagogy is superb and produces fantastic results. I’ve had the pleasure of witnessing his work first hand, He trains all levels of performers and has a load of patience ! Most importantly, he encourages a love for piano, the art, skill, and history. He’s your best choice in piano teachers, trust me!

Mr. Hayes is an extremely gifted performer and teacher. He knows how to teach difficult concepts in different manners, so that it is easy for his students to implement historically accurate techniques into their playing. He is always prompt and has his lessons planned out so that the student can learn as much as possible in the lesson period.
