Guitar

Levels Taught:
Beginner, Intermediate, Advanced
I recently graduated UCLA Herb Alpert School of Music with a BA in Music History. My concentration is theory and education.

I will travel anywhere in the LA region to teach students of all ages. Music is my passion and I live to share it with others.
Nothing brings me greater joy than connecting with someone on a musical level and seeing the light bulb, the "AHA!" moment when they get it, especially children, or seeing someone so impressed by their OWN capabilities because of what I taught them.

My past students claim my teaching to be the best they've ever had. Throughout high school and college, classmates would seek help from me claiming that my approach was easier to understand than that of the teacher or professor.

I have a unique way of tailoring my teaching style to the different ways in which people learn, including and especially kids.

My unique, outgoing, lighthearted, humorous, and warm personality qualify me appropriately for teaching music.

I can teach electric OR acoustic and also beginning piano if the house provides one. My lessons are unique not only in that they are fun and engaging but I like to include, if the student is receptive enough to it, what I like to call the "why" behind the music. For instance, if someone likes a certain sound, I am able to use language and music theory to explain why it is appealing or "catchy."

My students learn the HOW and the WHY behind the WHAT.

My passion for music existed as long as I can remember. When I was maybe three, my dad showed my a live video of a Dan Fogelberg concert. I would play it over and over again and mimic the players, using toy rifles as guitars and rigging up mic stands out of Tinker Toys (Yes, I'm old enough to remember Tinker Toys).

At 12 my dad bought me my first guitar and I caught on at a rate that was perceivably rapid. The words "natural" and "prodigy" were used, though I find them quite frivolous. By 14 I was playing in church worship bands and in high school I was playing in bands of my own.

There's a phrase, "Those that can't do teach." I cannot disagree more. Not everyone can teach. This requires a special sense, an ability to intuit the type of environment and experience which best suits the learner, and the ability to connect. My versatile personality and perceptive range of approaches more than qualifies me. Given the opportunity, I will show you or your child the uniquely memorable experience that is taking guitar lessons from me.

Although I was not a student of Lee’s—I was one of his college instructors—I can attest to outstanding qualities that would easily transfer to terrific, individualized guitar lessons. A very curious and hard-working person, Lee would ask insightful questions and would contribute generously to classroom discussions. His curiosity never seemed to waver and pointed to a sharp mind that that would keep growing and growing. I can envision him viewing his guitar students as fascinating mini-universes of possibility to nurture; he would be a teacher genuinely interested in taking students as far as he could with their development. Lee is a charming person and deals with people holistically. Based on what I heard him perform, he would be especially wonderful in teaching popular music styles on the guitar. Recommended!!

I find Lee to be the epitome of patience! He knows how to break a task into small steps, and follow through on each step without rushing or expressing frustration. I can be a slow learner at times, but Lee made the learning fun and encouraged me at every juncture. Having taught Special Ed myself, I can highly recommend Lee for his skill, patience, and insight into the needs of his students!

Lee is an amazing guitar teacher. I played some guitar growing up, and Lee was able to pick up what I had already learned and tailor a lesson plan uniquely for me and where I was at. I've had lessons before but have never grown so quickly and had so much fun learning an instrument! Lee's lessons are instructive and challenging, but he still makes sure you're learning things you enjoy and reaching your individual goals. Thanks Lee! :)

Lee is dedicated and passionate in his sharing of music with peers— I became a close colleague of his at UCLA in the School of Music. Through knowing Lee, I grew not just as a guitarist, but I furthered a development of musical understanding that encompasses all aspects of music: performance, composition, listening, and in-depth structural theory.

In my years of guitar playing I've yet to meet an individual more qualified to teach music. With qualifications ranging from a comprehensive understanding of what essential concepts and practices might be difficult for a new learner to an intuitive knack for making such ideas more accessible and fun for the learner, Lee is able to turn the most confusing, frustrating, and mundane musical topics into vivid, colorful moments of discovery. Although his knowledge and mastery of musical concepts reaches far beyond one simple instrument, it is on the guitar that his talent for playing and teaching really shines through. I would recommend anybody wishing a heightened musical education on either themself or their child to highly consider lessons with this teacher. Would give 6 stars if it was possible

Lee is an excellent teacher! Beyond patient! He has a unique way of understanding where the disconnect is when you don't understand something, & finding a way to clearly bridge that gap. He's very professional, kind, and down-to-earth.
Also, music is at the core of who he is, so he has so much knowledge from all his college courses, live music, and collaborations. I'd say, whatever your goal is, from just wanting to be able to play in jam sessions with your friends to wanting a more scholastic, theoretical approach to learning an instrument, Lee is extremely great at all music styles.

Lee Michael is an astounding guitarist, musical mentor, and knowledge enthusiast...my name is Marc Davis, a graduate of Berklee College of Music...I met Lee at an Our Lady Peace concert in Hollywood half a dozen years ago...we immediately meshed musically, but moreso, I saw in Lee a raw performance based style that I had always strived for. My time and lessons with him are far more than memorable; they are life changing...he taught me how to make my guitar speak as Marc Davis and not simply an instrument. He has a profound gift to help people to realize their own potential and helps to lead them to achieve their very own goals in a productive environment. I couldn’t speak more highly of his musical ability and his true ability to help aspiring musicians to realize their own... - M
