Hi! I am a linguist, educator, and yogi and I am passionate about sharing my skills!
Please note that I do not travel outside the city of Chicago.
ESL/Foreign Language Tutoring:
I am a currently pursuing my MA in Applied Linguistics and TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages). I majored in Romance Languages at New York University and have been providing private language tutoring since 2007, when I lived and studied in Brazil. I have helped ESL students prepare for job interviews and essay tests; I have helped Portuguese students prepare for vacations to Brazil and Portugal and voting rights work in Angola. I held a career in the translation industry for seven years before beginning my current MA program.
I have an excellent command of grammar and incorporate usage and vocabulary into each custom-tailored lesson. I encourage my students to use the materials they find most beneficial to their learning process, be they news articles, poetry, songs, or novels. I am happy to work from a language book of your choice or hand-design my own exercises for you in response to your particular needs. Homework will be assigned, but it will be fun and easy!

So far, Laura has given me one private yoga lesson, and it was excellent. Before our meeting, she asked me what problem areas I wanted to work on and came prepared with a list of probably 20 poses to show me. I had never taken a yoga class before, so I was understandably awkward and inflexible, but she was very patient in showing me the correct way to accomplish each pose. She was receptive to feedback throughout the lesson about what felt good and what didn’t feel quite right, and gently corrected me as we went along.
Additionally, I’ve worked with Laura for several years in a project management capacity. She’s fluent in Portuguese and has an excellent command of French and Spanish. I’ve seen her prep work for one of her private language students and can tell that she cares deeply about teaching, and puts quite a bit of time into preparing for each lesson. I would highly recommend her for any type of lessons you’re looking to take!

When I started taking classes with Laura, I had been down-spiraling after surgery watching my physical capabilities consistently not meeting my expectations after working for months to be released for full activity. It is hard for me to remember myself then, as I have progressed so much with her guidance. She has always worked diligently to ensure I was not risking re-injury while pushing me just enough that I have seen so much progress with no setbacks.
Because I have had such a great experience, I have brought many others to her classes and they always feel she gives them individual attention, explains all the poses thoroughly, and makes them feel comfortable. This hold true for those coming from all experience levels and with a variety of medical/physical concerns. They have all wanted to go back and some say they are shocked that they like it so much because they thought yoga was something they would never be able to do. I look forward to her class every week.

I've been practicing yoga for a few years now pretty regularly. I have been to a multitude of Laura's classes. She is simply just one of the best yoga instructors I've taken classes from. She is so highly skilled at gauging her students, pushing everyone of her students just the right amount. Laura does this with the utmost patience and sweetness. She's knowledgeable in many different types of yoga and can custom build yoga classes to strengthen or sooth any group of muscles you might need. I walk away from her yoga classes feeling like a million bucks and usually raving to someone about the class.
