Expert Game Master for Teaching Learners (6-18 Years Old) Life Skills Through Roleplaying Games

I'm a special education teacher, and so my focus is always on the individual styles, strengths and needs of each student. I customize my life skills classes around these traits, as well as on the preferred genre and personality style of my learners. For one-on-one gaming sessions, I explore with the learner whether they would like to play only with me ongoing, or prepare to join a gaming group I lead. If the learner decides to join a group, the next step is for the child or teen to decide which roleplaying game to play, and then I will help them develop their character. If the child would like to develop life skills through gaming one on one, we will choose a goal to focus on, such as learning social skills, developing creative thinking, or learning to think through actions and consequences. The child will choose the game genre through discussing questions such as these: Will it be based on a book, tv show, or movie? Will it be based on a time period and historical location? Will it be based on science fiction, mythology, or another topic? Would the learner like to make their own game or learn how to become a game master? I do not choose role-play games like D&D that involve normalization of violence. I choose games that prioritize diplomacy and non-violent problem-solving. Games that I run are games designed for children or teens, such as Tails of Equestria, based on the My Little Pony Friendship is Magic Series and a game for teens based on Marvel Universe.

    About Laura P.

I believe learning should be experienced as an adventure, with learners excited about the journey they embark upon. I engage all learners to contribute their ideas and vision of what they want each learning experience to be like. I use a lot of collaborative learning, group problem-solving, role play games, project-based learning, and creative process development. Specific course types I offer are group creative writing projects; role-playing games to build life skills; animation; storyboarding; character development; developing apps; learning to code, and more! I hold a B.A. in Psychology from Shorter College in Rome, Georgia. I also hold a Masters Degree in Psychology and an Ed.S. in Guidance and Counseling, both from the University of West Georgia. I have taken additional credits in special education at the University of California at San Jose, and I have passed the Praxis test in working with mild-moderate disabilities in all subject areas. In addition to the subject areas mentioned above, I love teaching reading to all kids, special needs, gifted, and both. I live in Oregon, and I am creating an animated educational game and video series called Axolotl Academy. I love drawing, making jewelry, epoxy resin designs, and educational toys. I share my home with two rare and beautiful pets, Beau, a 13 year old part Turkish Van cat, and Mishka Rose, a 10 week old Pomsky puppy. I believe learning should be a valuable adventure, and I live my life as an ongoing adventure.
