Classical Guitar

Levels Taught:
Beginner, Intermediate, Advanced

I offer lessons geared toward students of all levels who want to learn to play the music they love with the greatest ease and best technique that such music calls for. I teach all levels and all types of students.
I excel at teaching:
— music theory that is directly applicable to the guitar (and any other instrument) in a simple straightforward manner
— the essence of great technique (both finger style and picking and how to build it
— improvisation and composition
— classical guitar, electric guitar styles (blues, jazz, metal and more)
I hold a BFA in guitar performance from California Institute of the Arts and have taught children through CAP in LA and Hummingbird Music Camp in NM as well as a diverse group of people of all ages at Santa Fe Community College for two years. I've been teaching 10+ years in a variety of settings, age groups and types of people. I love teaching people who are excited about music and passionate about exploring the instrument and the potentials it has to offer in their lives.

Teaching since:

I've been studying guitar seriously since the end of my 14th year and quickly fell so in love with it that I knew very quickly that I'd go to school for it and play the instrument at a very high level, simply because I had a burning sensation within my heart that I had to or I'd never be satisfied. I've been teaching since I was 16 and have found that learning culminates in teaching, so for me it has been a great pleasure to guide others in the same field that I am so passionate about and thus to learn from my students in ways that are not possible when one is not a teacher.

I started with good old rock n' roll, beginning with Nirvana and heading back into the 60s to the likes of Hendrix, Zeppelin and more. I studied blues and then moved to jazz and classical and dabbled with flamenco and Indian music. Through it all I always had a strong attraction to metal and shredding and these genres became a big part of my musical expression and served as a synthesis for all the other styles I studied. In college I focused on classical guitar and even played the arch lute for a year and a half.

In 2016 I recorded an album of original metal music with my brother and we also released a 3 song EP of fully improvised metal, all in one take. You can listen to this music here and get a sense of my playing, though this only represents one dimension of my playing style:
