Overview

Hey!

My name is Kyle S. and I'm incredibly passionate about music education for all ages. Over twenty years of playing all instruments has taught me there is not one specific way to teach music, so I change my curriculum for every student and completely customize what you learn to how you learn, and what you're interested in. I started teaching music lessons in after school programs when I was eleven and fell totally in love. I continued to do this for many years driving to neighboring towns, volunteering at church youth groups and local Boys and Girls Club all around my hometown.

I went on to study Music Education at Oregon State University and Guitar Performance at the University of Oregon and Jazz Performance on Guitar at Portland State University! At each of these Universities I taught students my age as well as locals in each town and have been supporting myself entirely through music since 2008! Additionally, I work for a Record Label in Portland, "PJCE Records", and have real life experience with production, press releases and booking through the west coast and mid-west.

In Portland I've been gigging, playing on records, recording music for films, and volunteering every week at Nonprofit Music Schools around town to help underprivileged kids, and expose them to the joy of music. Give me a call and we can talk about what you're interested in, and get lessons started.

Look forward to hearing from you!

*** Lesson Details ***
I'm fairly laid back, and teach from a number of different texts depending on the interests of the student. Each student is different, and I vary instruction accordingly. I have a lot of experience songwriting, composing, and playing as a sideman in groups on different instruments. I've been part of bands led by myself and been hired by other people, as well as composing for different groups of instruments from trios to full orchestras.

If there is interest, I can also provide worksheets based on the curriculum and standards held by the University of Oregon, and Portland State University.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Private home studio equipped with a many guitars, a piano, a Wurlitzer, electric bass and amplifier, two drum kits, and a beautiful kitty.

*** Travel Equipment ***
I can provide guitars, amplifiers, and notebooks for all students even if they do not own guitars or amplifiers. I also make copies and email attachments of all homework, and record lessons and send them to students to listen to when practicing.

*** Specialties ***
I've been playing and studying guitar since I was seven years old. I've attended Berklee School of Music summer workshops, camps, seminars, and presented music theory papers at conferences at the University of Oregon. I can and am willing to teach any type of musical style or interest to any skill level!

Kyle has been great! I started using him for lessons for my son who just turned 5. He has the energy and attention span of a 5yr old. Despite this Kyle has done very well with him. He mixes the right amount of play and discipline to accomplish the lesson objectives and keep my son focused while maintaining a relationship with my son that makes him look forward to the lessons. I had a hard time finding teachers to start with someone so young, but Kyle has done great and I would certainly recommend giving him a try. We have done lessons both at Kyle's studio and our home.

Kyle's strengths lie in finding out where the student is, and then teaching to that level as well as inquiring and embracing the curiosity of the student. Whether you're there to learn the basics or to explore writing and "feeling into" music, Kyle is a great guide. I have appreciated him and recommend him wholeheartedly.

I've had 4 different guitar teachers in the past and none of them teaches like Kyle does. I can feel that Kyle has a very vast but deep understanding in music, but more importantly he knows how to convey his knowledge to a student, which is an ability many teachers lack. Kyle would change his way of teaching according to different students, and I know this because he integrates piano into my guitar lessons due to my past experience with a piano, and it helps so much.

Kyle is very patient and approachable, but has just the perfect amount of sternness to keep pushing you forward.

Learn with Kyle, you won't regret it.

Thank you Kyle :)

Kyle has been teaching my 9 year old and 5 year old kiddos piano. He has taught my 9 year old more music theory than she's learned in all three years she's been taking lessons elsewhere. Highly recommended!!

Kyle is teaching my five year old to play piano. She is a beginner, somewhat shy and very strong willed. He is patient with her, tailoring the instruction to her speed, interests and attention span. He is skilled at praising her for her progress and continuing to push her. She responds very well to the open learning environment he has created and feels comfortable with him even after only a few lessons. I was concerned starting her so young, but she expressed great interest and Kyle has connected with that in a lovely way. I highly recommend him as a teacher.

Kyle has been one of the most helpful music teachers I've had the privilege to take lessons from. He cuts through all of the extraneous pedantries that so often inhibit real effective music instruction and learning. He is approachable and down to earth while wielding a vast and comprehensive knowledge of music, which makes for a genuinely satisfying and productive educational experience. Five stars for sure.

Kyle has a deep understanding of music. He knows the theory far beyond an ivy halls definition of things. He understands what is important and what is used by a playing musician. This is helping me get a deep understanding of music. I am very confident that if I put in the effort I can not help but become a good musician who will be able to lay a nice arrangement under a melody or accompany myself or others. Kyle gives you the knowledge and the exercises needed to succeed. I highly recommend Kyle.

I have been a piano teacher for 30 years and taught my grandson. I moved out of state and did some research. My goal was to find a teacher where my grandson could ride his bike to lessons, a young role model with good credentials. I got 3 choices and after talking with all 3, Kyle was it. He is wonderful; inspirational, inspiring, creative and encouraging. He is not a push over. He has expectations and the enthusiasm and commitment on the part of my grandson (14 yrs. old) is a dream come true!

Kyle is a patient, flexible, thoroughly knowledgeable teacher and musician. I signed up to take singing lessons with him, having not done a bit of it for 15 years or so. I'm mostly a beginner and he immediately intuited what I needed from him in terms of balancing instruction, discipline, and enjoyment.

My schedule is busy, and I was less than committed to practice and being present/confident in my lessons. Kyle has been encouraging as well as forgiving precisely when I need him to be, which is essential for adults learning or relearning musical skills as an aside to a full-time job and other responsibilities.

Kyle tailors our lessons exactly to my diverse levels of proficiency on both piano accompaniment and voice, and throws in music theory only when appropriate (he is extremely clear about why he's doing it, which I really appreciate.)

Most importantly, he's always willing to have us practice and perform songs during lessons that appeal to my musical preferences, ensuring it always remains fun and attractive and I leave the lesson with extremely positive feelings, which promotes the learning and continuation of my lessons.

I love his laid-back attitude combined with professional, serious approach to music, which clearly is his passion and something he loves deeply. He's exactly the kind of teacher I was looking for and his home studio is a very inviting, comfortable place to practice and learn.

I recommend him highly to anyone looking for guidance, flexibility, and a positive, encouraging, open musical experience. Thanks, Kyle!

Patient and thorough teacher

Kyle is teaching both of my kids and both are beginning players. A five year old on drums and a ten year old on guitar. I have been so pleased with the way he tailors instruction to their age, attention span, and knowledge. I am especially pleased at the way he is teaching musicianship as a whole (music theory, sight reading, basics of structure) along with the fundamentals of the instrument itself.
I like the way he creates a learning environment where the kids feel safe to ask questions, or admit they don't understand something. He never talks down to them, but rather treats them as partners in their own learning. They are both having fun and I would definitely recommend him as a teacher.
