*WHY TAKE LESSONS* Study after study shows that strong music exposure at young ages leads to academic success in all subjects. But the benefits propagate throughout your life - confidence, positive self-esteem, and the knowledge that working hard yields fruit. My job as your teacher is to help you or your young child along this path. It's not a stretch to see that music lessons, where you achieve success by diligent practice, teach patience and discipline. *WHO I AM* I'm a recent graduate of the Applied Music Program at San Diego Mesa College and a current senior at San Diego State University majoring in Music Performance. I've been teaching since 2011, and have had a blast teaching students as young as 5 and as "mature" as 65 (their words, not mine!). I specialize in classical guitar technique. So often guitarists are stereotyped as "musically illiterate." You know, the guys who can play a couple chords, but don't read any music except tab and sing out of tune. Not my students! By the time you've had a few lessons with me, you'll be reading music, playing chords, and have a strong foundation to pursue a future in music - should that be your desire. That being said, music is supposed to be fun. We'll be learning, but hopefully I'll do my job so well you won't even realize I've just taught you a bunch of music theory mumbo-jumbo! *LESSON POLICIES* We'™re all here for the music. With that in mind, there are a few things we can all do to make sure we have the best experience possible, which I'™ll go through now: THE THREE P'™s I promise to be professional, punctual, and prepared. In return, I ask the same from you. The rest of our policies are merely an extension of these three, so if we follow these three p'™s, we'™ll have the most fun! THE IMPORTANCE OF PRACTICE For most students, we meet once a week. Six of the seven days of the week, then, it'™s up to you to work on your scales, arpeggios, chords, pieces, and the myriad other parts that make up being a musician. My job as a teacher is to provide guidance; to show you the way I think is the best, to encourage and to push. As a student, your job is to listen, to try, to experiment, and to even fail. Most of this occurs outside of our small time together. Generally, 30 minutes to an hour of practice a day will be enough for younger students. As you improve your skill and technique, you'™ll want to practice even more. Without practice, our precious time together will be spent working on things you would normally be doing during your six days. I don'™t mind playing scales with you (I do like playing scales),“ but wouldn't you rather be jamming?
