Allow me to create a customized lesson plan for you (even across disciplines) based on your skill level and goals. We can go over specific software programs, do exercises designed to get you up to speed and feeling confident ASAP, or create larger projects such as a website/blog/social media presence, online store of your own designs, ads for your business, or an animated short that tells your story. In our first lesson I will take time to get to know you, your background, your computer/software set-up, and your ambitions and I will help you move forward and design custom lessons that best suit your needs, budget, and schedule. Since 2000 I have been teaching graduate and undergraduate university students in North America, Europe, Africa, and Asia. I currently live in Lilongwe, Malawi (*I like to help in developing countries) where I am helping in the education, art/culture, and humanitarian sectors. I'm an American/Portuguese multimedia artist and educator who recently taught digital media to secondary students at Thalun International School in Yangon, Myanmar. I'm also a former Associate Professor of Digital Media at American University of Myanmar (2016-2018) as well as at The American University of Rome (2006-2016) where I co-founded and directed its Film and Digital Media Program. Besides teaching tens of thousands of students on online platforms since 2014, I'm also a Course Facilitator for the UN-mandated University for Peace (Costa Rica) through their Centre For Executive Education. My work is exhibited internationally and online and has received a number of awards. I received my MFA from Pratt Institute in Computer Graphics and Interactive Media and also hold a BFA in Painting from Massachusetts College of Art and Design. I love taking complex topics and making them simple. My students have gone on to become confident professionals employed in creative fields, have started their own businesses, and/or have been accepted to graduate school to continue their learning. Get the most for your time and money. I can help anyone improve their skills, often dramatically and in an unusually short amount of time. My super power is teaching you the most important skills you need to know so that you quickly and easily accelerate to an advanced level and gain confidence when others are still struggling with beginner basics. I love working with people from all walks of life and of all skill levels. Let me meet you where you are, and help you move effectively toward your goals fast. What can I help you with today?

This was our first experience with online instruction and we are so pleased with the results. My daughter has become reenergized by Kristen's techniques and overall knowledge of her craft. She was continually making recommendations to elevate my daughter's abilities. Kristen met and exceeded our expectation. We will seek Kristen again for future classes.

After taking Kristen's class, I was able to use Illustrator to create great graphics for T-shirts, posters and my podcast's Web site. This class was informative and easy to understand, and I would recommend it to anyone who wants to create computer art and graphics.

You might think such an accomplished, award winning artist and filmmaker couldn't be so down to earth, but Kristen Palana knows how to deliver a lesson in manageable portions and nurtures her students' growth in her naturally productive and encouraging manner. She is generous with her knowledge and solid advice, and is at the same time very concise and clear. Her delivery is upbeat, positive and practical, and she makes it her mission to help others grow in her areas of specialty. Having access to teachers like Kristen is a blessing, and I couldn't recommend her more!

    Oct, 2015

University For Peace: Centre For Executive Education

"A social innovator is someone who intentionally nurtures the skills that cannot be outsourced, are intrinsically human, and are essential for the 'Conceptual Age' that we live in. A social innovator embraces the core values espoused by the United Nations: that we are one, human family living in a highly interdependent and fragile world. The complex issues that face us in the 21st Century–from climate change to poverty alleviation–require a new form of thinking. Becoming a social innovator not only means pursuing your own positive impact goals, but also generating meaning and reflection on your own life. The Social Innovator journey towards positive impact is more than just outward actions; it’s a deep reflection on the tools and skills needed to become a conscious global leader."
