Hello everyone! My name is Kevin and I am a pianist, vocalist, and instrument connoisseur. I have been playing the piano since I was 10 and taught myself how to play by ear. Growing up in a church environment I first taught myself gospel and later jazz. I personally love jazz, and this is one of my areas of strength. It wasn't until I was about 16 years old, while attending my first college, that I started exploring music in depth and as a potential career. As I started to delve deeper, I began to compose and have had some ensemble groups perform my pieces. I have arranged pieces for choirs and accompanied them as well. I also play guitar and bass guitar. As a well rounded musician I can teach you how to play the piano, how to learn music theory, how to compose and the beginning levels of guitar and voice.
I've been teaching and tutoring music students for about 5 years now. I've always loved and enjoyed music, and want to share that same joy through teaching. I started teaching by tutoring my peers in college and realized how rewarding it is. I then started to include students of all ages while continuing my education. I have a knack for music theory as well, this is typically a challenging area for most people, and I find it extremely important for a growing musician. I've been teaching choirs and bands in multiple school districts over the past 2 years, and I love working with children especially. I have conducted my community college choirs, along with their concert band, and orchestra. My true passion lies in conducting as I am a classical pianist with an ultimate goal as a conductor in my future.
I am currently attending college to obtain a bachelor's degree in music, with my emphasis on collaborative piano, conducting, and composition. I have been taught from coast to coast, while gathering much more in between. I previously attended Bard College at Simons Rock (Great Barrington, Massachusetts) at the Age of 15, then moved back to California at the age of 17. I currently attend Cosumnes River College and have plans to transfer this fall to a major four year university to complete my bachelors degree. Presently, I work for the Sacramento Unified School District as a Piano Teacher and Choir Accompanist.
*** Lesson Details ***
In first meeting with a student I like to establish realistic short term goals, along with an overall goal in mind. Say nothing and teaching them everything. I like to promote a learning style of self-found knowledge. The best way to make something stick, is to discover it yourself. I like to see the "light bulb" effect in my students. Children seem to learn best when a lesson plan is catered to them, and when teaching is shown physically. Adolescence and adults tend to learn from a more technical stand point, with the emphasis on "how it works." My goal is to fuel a students thirst for the instrument and music as a whole. Depending on the student, and their goals, we can have a lesson ranging from really fun and easy going lesson to something a bit stricter that will keep up their progression and focus. I am a very patient person and have experience with ALL ages and ALL types of people.
I use a lot of different materials during lessons. Typically each of my students will have about 2 books at a time, one for the instrument and technique, and the other for theory. Though I love to cover many bases and provide the most knowledge to each of my students, it is also a priority to make sure that the knowledge is affordable. For that reason, I try to stick with more commonly used, easily accessible, and affordable books from publishers like Hal Leonard, Alfred, and G. Schirmer.
Within 2 or 3 months my students can look forward to having clear knowledge in the basics of their instrument(s) along with the theory behind the music. I will continue to keep an open line of communication with my students to ensure that I am meeting their goals, encourage questions, and ensuring their progress forward.

I direct and manage all of the worship arts activities for the church. Our current activities include adult choir, children's choir, chime (handbell) chorus, concerts/performances, special music, & praise and worship team (voice & band). During the first 2-3 lessons Ryan was easily distracted, very playful, and frustrated because structured piano lessons were not the same as banging on the piano and shouting words to a song. After a few lessons, we noticed a difference in Ryan's attention span and maturity concerning his piano lessons and school work. He is more focused and he takes pride in having a great lesson (note recognition, theory, fingering, and completing a song). Ryan is having a wonderful time in his piano lessons with Kevin! Ryan likes the encouragement and praise that Kevin gives him for a lesson well done. Kevin has even incorporated a "mini voice lessons" at the end of the piano lesson. Ryan loves it and now looks forward to his piano lessons!
