Experienced bassist/pianist available for eager students of all experience levels and ages! I started playing piano as a young child, and bass while in high school. I have been unable to put down either since! I structure my lessons around what students want to, while also helping them build a strong musical foundation. I teach electric bass, upright bass, piano, and other keyboard instruments (organ, synthesizer, etc.). The main genres I cover are rock, blues, pop, funk, and jazz, but am also capable of teaching classical, latin, folk, country, and many other styles. I utilize a number of texts in my lessons, including, but not limited to, method books by Simandl, Ray Brown, and Rufus Reid, an etude collection by John Pattitucci, and a latin method by Oscar Stagnaro. The following materials are available at my studio: amp, basses, cables, effect pedals, recording equipment, manuscript paper, and more. Piano lessons are conducted at the student's home.

I picked up the bass during high school, and performed in the school's jazz ensemble, guitar ensemble, orchestra, symphonic band, and percussion ensemble. These groups help me establish foundational skills on both bass guitar and upright bass, and provided me with an understanding of the prevalence and diversity of bass in many types of music. In 2011, I began studying music at the University of Utah, and graduated in December 2014 with a Bachelor of Music in Jazz Performance. During that time, I was able to study under the best musicians in Utah, exploring numerous areas of music, including theory, history, composition, recording, performance technique, and many more. It was during this time that I established my private studio, as well as began teaching at the Granger School of Music in Park City, where I also help develop music courses for high school credit.

I have had the pleasure of playing in many different bands and ensembles for over 10 years. During this time, I have played throughout Utah and surrounding states, embarked on a handful of tours, appeared on TV and radio, and participated in multiple recording projects. Recent projects include Hot House West, Crook & The Bluff, and Charles Ellsworth.

Crook & The Bluff

Crook & The Bluff is a western, psychedelic blues band based in Salt Lake City, UT. Through a skyline of amps, a labyrinth of pedals, and a rhythm section that looms on the horizon like that of an imminent lightning storm, this four piece creates a sound that is at times as colossal as the canyons their home state Utah is carved with, yet like the howling breeze in the twilight hours becomes as intimate as sharing a bottle of bourbon beside the fire. Their blend of psychedelia, blues, and folk coalesces into a singular, definitive feeling of the American West.

Kevin is amazing and will focus your lessons on your goals and musical interests. At the end of every lesson I feel like I have things to discover and explore, not things to repeat and memorize.

My 8 year old daughter has been taking lessons with Kevin for almost a year. She likes that the lessons are fun, Kevin taught her the Super Mario Brothers theme song, and I like that she is being challenged while also developing an appreciation for all types of music. Even though my daughter is taking guitar lessons, Kevin occasionally incorporates other instruments (piano, mandolin, ukulele) into her lessons. We both love this! Kevin is always on time and comes to each lesson with a planned agenda. He is also great to work with when rescheduling. We hope to continue our lessons with Kevin! He is awesome!

Kevin Schultz is an extremely qualified teacher of many instruments. I have taken Mandolin and Piano from him and is able to match his instruction to my way of learning. I have seen him perform with his band Electric Cathedral as well and was
amazed at their talent.
I would highly recommend lessons from Kevin Schultz.

I have been taking bass guitar lessons from Kevin for over six months now. He was able to teach me the fundamentals of music in a way that allowed me to progress with an understanding of how music works and how it works specifically in playing the bass. I have reached the point where I can start applying that understanding to the playing of songs in context. It makes a huge difference. Highly recommended.

Kevin has been teaching guitar to my son for 1 year. He has really helped my son develop a love for listening to and playing guitar. Kevin is very professional and knowledgable about music, and he is able to communicate and teach well to a 9 year old.
We are thrilled that we have Kevin as our son's music mentor, and look forward to watching him develop as a musician under Kevin's guidance.

My English is not perfect but i don't have problem to understand him :) He's patient, has good technique, and an outgoing personality. I highly recommend!! So far I've only had 4 lessons with him but I booked a 20 more so I can continue to improve my upright bass. Firstly, I was wondering about to take lesson online because i couldn't image in how it will be :). I am so glad to take class from him. I am so thankful him to make me fell better. I wished i would knew him many months ago.

Kevin's passion for music in infectious in his teaching style. He really wants his students to enjoy playing and to have a deep understanding of their instrument, and his strong knowledge base is apparent in every lesson.

I have studied music for many years with other instruments, and have had many different instructors. I am the kind of student who wants to know the hows and whys of what I am doing, not just be shown a list of chords and shapes to memorize, and Kevin has been a perfect match. I feel challenged but supported; he is willing to answer even the dumbest questions with a straight face.

I would recommend him to anyone of any skill level. He is patent and good humored while maintaining a feeling of professionalism and dedication.

Great teacher!

I'm really enjoying lessons with Kevin. He's extremely knowledgeable and he explains things very clearly. I'm an older student with some musical knowledge, but I desired to learn more of the theory aspect of music, along with learning how to play. Kevin is incorporating everything I want to learn into the lessons in a fun way. It is never boring and though he keeps a fast pace, I don't feel lost at any time because he always stops to see if have any questions about what he's covering. He's willing to customize the teaching to suit what kind of styles and techniques I want to learn. I'm very pleased with this teacher and would recommend him to anyone.

Fantastic Guitarist! Even Better Teacher!

I'm an advanced guitarist, and started as such when I started receiving lessons from Kevin. I took lessons to learn music theory and how to apply it to my guitar. We discussed rhythm, melody, and harmony, and I studied it on my own time as well with a music theory book. We also discussed audio pre-production and used a few programs to help with learning it. Kevin had a few injuries during the time I was taking the lessons, but was very quick to make up each lesson he missed. Kevin is an awesome guitarist/bassist and friend. If I was still in Salt Lake, I'd continue to take lessons from him to further my audio production skills.
