    About Kenny W.

I am a professional working musician and a licensed K-12 instructor in the State of Louisiana, having graduated from Loyola University New Orleans with a Bachelors of Music Education, with a Minor in Jazz Studies in the spring of 2016. I play the guitar (electric, steel/ nylon string acoustic), the trombone (tenor/ bass), and the drums (kit). Guitar students can and should expect to improve in some facet every week after every lesson. Every person approaches music differently, and thereby, approaches the guitar differently. Different bodies mean different physical methods for successful playing. Different brains mean different musical realities- and whatever the state of yours is, I want to help you make it better. There are so many different ways to be musical, and as your teacher I want to make you aware of them, and help you use every tool in your toolbox, as well as give you some new ones. Music is not too vast to understand, and all it takes is one little push to be off on your way, making your own musical adventures. As someone who has thrived in most ensemble scenarios from Concert Bands, Orchestras, Big Bands, to Rock Bands and Jazz Combos, I can help prepare you for any musical undertaking. I love students who love music and want to get better at it, regardless of what style it might be in. So whoever you are, whatever you like, and wherever your skills are at, I want to help- to impart you with skills and knowledge you might need to play at the level you want. I look forward to meeting you and helping you be even more awesome!

    Experience

    Working Musician

    Jan, 2014 - Present

    N/A

I've been playing in bars, clubs, theaters, auditoriums and other eclectic locations for years. I have performed original music, jazz standards, New Orleans Traditionals, Big Band charts and symphonies. From shredding in the foreground to long-tones in the background- been there, done that. It doesn't matter what manner of gig it is- any occasion where you get to make money playing music is a good one. When you're not on the bandstand, you just wish you were.

    Camp Counselor

    Summer Fenn Day Camp

Working at Summer Fenn was an extraordinarily cathartic experience. I had been a camper there ten years prior to being hired, and it had rested in my memory as being overwhelmingly positive. So when I had the chance to return as a grown man, having just graduated from University, it felt like coming full-circle. As a base-camp and specialty councilor (base-camp being exactly what it sounds like: the basic regular day camp), I worked with first through eighth graders- shepherding my campers from activity to activity, keeping them engaged both mentally and physically at every possible moment, playing games, leading activities, singing songs and building trust. Wouldn't trade it for the world.

    Newman Daycamp

Children are a massive responsibility, especially at summer camp. One must be a leader, a teacher, a chaperone and a friend all at once. You have been charged with the safety, well being, and advancement of another human being, AND you need to help them have fun at the same time. Working at Newman was a special and educational experience.

    Jazz Instructor

    Jun, 2010 - Jul, 2012

    Lexplorations

"Lexplorations" is a summer program created by the Town of Lexington, Massachusetts (where I grew up), offering heavily subsidized summer camps to any student attending any one of the Lexington Public Schools. I was both a camper and eventually a volunteer councilor. My high school band director, Justin Aramati, hired me to help teach in his "All That Jazz" program- which as one might expect, was about teaching Jazz music. I specifically was the guitar instructor, and would teach both group lessons with larger ensembles of students from middle and high school, as well as smaller, instrument-specific masterclasses. Thus, I have been a teacher of Jazz since 2010.
