Piano

Levels Taught:
Beginner, Intermediate
I have been teaching piano for almost 5 years and my students have gone on to apply themselves in expressive ways. Within the first few lessons, you'll be able to read notes on the staff and play music in the key of C-Major, and as time goes by, you'll be able to play intermediate level studies such as Haydn! The book that my piano students study out of is called, "Alfred's Group Piano for Adults" by E.L. Lancaster, but we will also be reading from supplementary textbooks as well. I love working with students of all ages and experience levels and I can't wait to meet you!

Kelsey T. is a composer of music for quartet, string ensembles, piano, guitar, and chorus. While studying music at the University of North Texas, Kelsey was classically trained to play guitar and piano, while performing in the Men's Chorus. His piece "Colors" (2010) for string quartet & piano became a point of interest in the writing of "161 Glass: Site Specific Music in an Artistic Context" by Christina Rusnak, Composer and Executive Director of Philadelphia's award winning ensemble, Orchestra 2001. Having been influenced by the musical works of Reich, Glass, and Xenakis, Kelsey's composition style is attributed to his interdisciplinary study of Music & Architecture. Today, he continues his work as a music teacher, contemporary composer, and as an architectural drafter for various architects in the Dallas-Fort Worth Area.

*** Lesson Details ***
I tailor each of my lessons to the needs of my students, in the direction that he/she would like to see their musical skill grow. I begin each new student's first lesson by getting to know a student's weaknesses and strengths, and prepare each lesson based on the student's pace of learning. In addition to the teaching of the instrument, all of my students learn to read music, as well as ear training, sight-reading, and theory. I've found that by giving my students a more rounded understanding of music, it not only opens a broader range of interest in music, but makes the learning experience that much more meaningful.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Living Room: Seating Area for parents who choose to sit in on lesson. Equipment List: Music Stand, Casio Keyboard, Gibson Flying V Electric Guitar and Amplifier, Keystation Pro MIDI Controller, OscarSchmidt Acoustic Guitar, SilverTone Electric Guitar and Amplifier, SoundTech PA System, Valencia Classical Guitar, and more.

*** Travel Equipment ***
During the first couple of weeks, I can provide the reading material by email, in PDF format. After the introduction, the student is expected to purchase the book to keep up with the learning pace, in order to make his/her independent practice more efficient. The student is expected to use his/her own instrument, and be prepared with blank sheet music paper and other supplies for note-taking. If the rehearsal is at my home studio, I can provide the keyboard, studio equipment, and other supplies needed for our lesson.

*** Specialties ***
I've composed in various contrasting styles of music from baroque-style counterpoint, classical Galant style, to Post-1970's Avant-Garde. In my own music, I specialize in contemporary technique, minimalism, electro-acoustic, as well as experimentalism of the late 20th century into the 21st.

Kelsey was a great fit for our 14 year old daughter who was just learning guitar. She really enjoyed learning from him, and he was very flexible with her trying to learn songs that may have been a bit ahead of where she would have been in her lessons. I think that being flexible is a great way to keep your child interested in learning. He was always on time and very courteous. We are sad that he is moving but we wish him the best of luck in his future endeavors!

Kelsey has worked with my son on piano for a year or so and done a great job.
He has the patience of a Saint!! Which is extremely necessary when teaching a 10 year old boy. Jacob's had many teachers in the 5 years he's been on the piano and touts that Kelsey has been his favorite of all.

I have recommended him to friends and would always put in a good word.
The only reason he's no longer instructing our son, is that he is moving.

Student

Kelsey, is a great instructor. He focuses in on what you need and asks where you want to go with it, and then helps you learn at your pace. He is very knowledgable in most music genres and has a great sense of humor!!!
