Think of me as a creative guide rather than a singing teacher. I provide opportunities to develop skills that will help with singing as well as personal artistic growth. You will learn vocal technique, and then be asked to take the next step and create your own style and approach. If you are interested, we can work on creating original compositions and songs. Over the course of my lessons, you will also learn about a variety of foundational musical topics, explore the concept of creativity, and develop your own creative process.

About Kelly K.

In my lessons, you will get to know the unique qualities of your own voice, then learn to shape and strengthen it through specialized knowledge and easy daily exercises.

Every voice matters! I'm here to help you find yours.

I am not your traditional voice teacher. Following in the footsteps of musical auteurs David Byrne and Brian Eno, I studied art at University. Immediately after graduating, I put art aside to pursue my passion for singing and songwriting in New York City. While there, I sang and played keyboard, wrote and performed original music. I took years of private voice lessons. These were with jazz/pop singer Karina Denike (of Dance Hall Crashers, NOFX) and jazz/pop singer Julie Hardy. I gained real world experience singing and performing with dozens of independent pop, rock and indie bands.

A decade of musical wisdom and a degree in the arts have united to form my unique approach to teaching. I teach a technique that creates a strong, consistent, unified voice throughout one's range. At the heart of all styles of singing is the body, and the body is your instrument. Awareness of the body enables you to learn how to manipulate your body, and thus, to "play"your instrument.

She does a great job finding parts where my voice needs improvement and quickly explains things so I understand quickly and can address it.

I have been a vocal student of Kelly for 2 years. I've seen such a drastic improvement. She has helped me to progress far beyond what I thought was possible. I have recently performed in 4 part barbershop quartet. Kelly helped to make that happen! You will love her!

I am a beginner and have been working with Kellie once a week for 2 months.

As a dancer, I am interested in continued exploration of my body as a communication tool. Kellie has guided me to literally OPEN UP and FEEL (not overthink) the rhythm of my human expression.

Pros:
1) educational - music theory & voice box anatomy
2) personalized to go at my own pace
3) class is online - I can practice something vulnerable in the comfort of my own home
4) open learning environment - intuition and bodily exploration is encouraged
5) foundational approach - breath, posture, warm up drills, basic vocabulary are all emphasized

Cons:
1) class is online - nothing beats "in person" feedback
2) we meet once a week - I would like to meet more often to keep the process active (though I can't swing it right now, maybe in the future?)
3) had to download SKYPE as the communication platform

Advice to future students:
1) Pick a song/goal to guide the structure of your class.
2) Set aside personal reflection/practice time in between class each week
3) Make this unique to you. Explore your fears and WHY you are drawn to exploring your voice. This can be an empowering and therapeutic process.

Kellie is a professional creative who brings her full self to class each week. I appreciate her hard work and devotion to me as a student. I work day to day as a barista and have had regulars comment that they notice something different about the way I hold myself - yes Kellie is working some major magic. I can’t put a price tag on this experience. Thank you!

At first I just wanted lessons so I could be less embarrassed at karaoke parties. Then Kelly got me hooked. Her exercises are incredibly fun and her knowledge of how the voice works so extensive that its hard not to fall in love with singing after spending time with her. I'm now understanding how this instrument that is my body works and how I can tune it to sound better. She caters her lessons to me and what I need to work on next to gain more understanding and retrain my body to sound amazing. Its a whole body practice from posture to breathe, to anatomy to music theory. Shes amazing and I would recommend her lessons even if you never desire to sing in public.
