I believe this is a great time to be a musician. I have come of age as a musician in a time when music making and the music industry have shifted dramatically. There are many positives in this shift, with new oppurtinites opening up for musicians. I also see these changes not being addressed in music education. There are many things I wish I would've been taught when I was younger that would have accelerated my growth, and I love using that knowledge to accelerate my student's growth. I teach tonal harmony (as you'd learn in music school), focus on groove and rhythm (which is commonly neglected in music school), and an awareness of new technology (which was ignored when I was in music school). I believe because no matter which direction you are coming from, you will come to this intersection making music in this era.

Kellen is a gifted instructor. As an adult learner I wasn't sure what to expect, but I was impressed with his structured and thoughtful approach to creating an excellent foundation and building skills.

Kellen has been a fantastic and knowledgeable bass teacher. I came into this with no background in music whatsoever but his teaching process is very simple and easy to grasp. He got a feel for what I did and didn’t know within 15 minutes on the first day & jumped right into improving the relevant skills I needed to learn next. Every lesson I learn something completely new and there is no wasted time. If you want to be pushed to become a better bass player in a very easygoing and welcoming environment, Kellen is the teacher for you.

    Experience

    Private Instructor

    Jan, 2005 - Present

    Experience

I have taught many different types of students in the last 12 years, from children to grandparents. I have taught Upright Bass, Electric Bass, Guitar, and Ableton lessons. I am classically trained, but have had a lot of real life gigging and music making experience, which informs how I teach. I think everyone should learn technology and composition basics to frame how music is made in this modern era. Most of all, it should be a fun rewarding experience. I love to teach and watch my students progress and be able to play the music they love!

    Freelance Musician

    Sep, 2003 - Present

    Experience

I have performed in a huge variety of situations over my career. I've been in Orchestras, jazz bands, hip hop group, rock groups, anything that is good music. I have played with bands and musicians such as Wild Belle, Cayucas, Sinkane, Lenny Pickett, Bernard Purdie, and Mark Giuliana. I have travelled the world playing music, and played festivals like Coachella, Lollapalooza, Outside Lands, and TV shows like The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, and Conan. This variety of performance situations really informs my teaching, and I tend to get students playing the music they love very quickly.

    Producer/Composer

    Jan, 2003 - Present

    Experience

I have written and co written many songs. I work out of my home studio with hardware gear and with music technology, primarily Ableton, Reason, and Garage Band. I love the combination of the sounds and textures of real instruments with the editing and creative capabilities that computer software offers. I have done film scoring, dance music, recording bands live, and many other hybrid musical situations.
