I am a working, professional singer. While I am currently pursuing an opera career, I have plenty of experience in pop, jazz, musical theater and choral singing, and am very comfortable singing and teaching a variety of styles. I offer lessons in each of these styles. Students can choose to focus on one, or we can try a bit of everything! Lessons will consist of a series of breathing exercises and vocal warm-ups to address issues like range, tone, stamina, releasing tension, etc. I can also help singers with reading music and learning to sight-read. I have helped past students work towards auditions, upcoming school performances, preparing for open mic nights or other public performances, etc. Students can also work on singing while playing an instrument like the guitar or piano. ***For combined lessons, I recommend signing up for at least 45 minutes, as it is difficult to accomplish much in a 30 minute lesson when trying to learn both***

About Katy A.

I am a classically trained musician with experience studying jazz and pop. I have performed in a wide variety of musical genres such as opera, oratorio, big band, jazz, musical theater, pop, lots of choral experience, etc.

*** Lesson Details ***
Lessons are all about you! I want to give you the skills necessary to make the kind of music you want. I use a variety of ear training methods, books, and techniques to help you grow as a musician. I never want my students to dread coming to their lessons. We can learn classical techniques or we can just have a good time learning to play your favorite pop music. It is my hope that after a few months you have gained confidence as well as the necessary skills to achieve things you may not have thought possible before studying with me!

*** Studio Equipment ***
I have a full-sized weighted keyboard, acoustic guitar, and ukulele in my home studio.

*** Travel Equipment ***
I usually bring my laptop for video demonstrations, recordings, and listening to music for transcriptions. I also have a metronome and some music. I expect my students to have their own instruments and to obtain a copy of the music/books we are using. If they can not find the music/book themselves, I can purchase it and let them reimburse me. I also require that all in-home voice students have a piano or keyboard with a stand.

*** Specialties ***
Comfortable and proficient in pop, classical, jazz, and musical theater styles.

Katy is a great teacher! She is very punctual when it came to lesson times and I never had to worry about her being late. Katy was also great with both of my daughters which is always comforting for a parent!

I have been taking piano lessons from Katy so, to be honest, I can't really vouch for her singing lessons, but what I DO want to review Katy as a teacher. If I had a kid who wanted to study voice, I would DEFINITELY sign on with Katy. You need a GOOD TEACHER. And based on my piano lessons with Katy she is the best of the best. She is kind, supportive and knows her stuff. She actually told me two lessons in that my piano skills were beyond what she could teach. Shows that she is honest and has confidence in what she is able and not able to teach. Even so, she was able to watch my playing and recommend some EXCELLENT techniques that I have been able to use. This is a sign of a true "ego-out-of-it" wonderful teacher. She wants the best for her students and has NO PROBLEM assessing her OWN skills and determining whether she is the best teacher for you. She actually said, two lessons in, I may not be the best teacher for you, but I DO know someone who might be better suited for you. If Katy A. can't teach your child what he/she needs to know, she has no problem (and plenty of contacts!) ensuring your child the right teacher for him or her.

I take both Singing and Piano lessons from Katy and she is an awesome teacher. She not only teaches the techniques, but tries to instill a genuine appreciation of music into me. In almost every lesson, at one point she will ask what I want to work on. A lot of teachers seem to just require a book and hammer the book into the student. This may make you better, but more often than not, you will begin to lose your interest in it. Katy's combination of what should be done and what you want to do is a perfect way to develop skill while maintaining/increasing your interest. She is an extremely patient teacher. Many times I will get stuck at exercises and concepts that must be very trivial to her, but her patience never wavers. In fact, I even get impatient at myself and wonder how she's not just flipping out already. The environment she provides is very casual and in fact, her entire teaching style is very casual. It really puts me at ease and provides a great environment for learning. So in summary, as a teacher, you can expect her to teach you a ton while enjoying your time. As a person, also very awesome. Super easy to talk to. Funny and definitely interesting. If you're looking to gain some music skills while having fun, I see no reason to choose anyone other than Katy.

Katy is an incredible teacher. She is flexible with hours/time and really works with you to find what is best for you. I have only been taking lessons with Katy for a few weeks and have improved noticeably already. She is friendly, smart, and collaborative. Could not recommend her more

Katy has been giving piano lessons to my twin 5-year old daughters. They were nervous about starting lessons, but Katy put them at ease right away. She has a wonderful manner with young children. My daughters have progressed more quickly than I expected they would. They enjoy practicing on their own too, because they want to impress her! I am so thrilled that we found her.

Katy has worked wonders for my 11 year-old. Maia cannot wait for voice lessons with Katy each week. If you are thinking of an effective voice teacher who works well with children, you need look no further. Katy is extremely talented as a singer and teacher. I am very happy with her teaching my daughter!

Katy is awesome!

Katy is without a doubt an amazing teacher. I'm very self-conscious when it comes to my singing but Katy helps bring out the confidence in me. Also very fun to work with and most importantly, I don't feel weird when singing in front of her. Lol I've only been her student for over a month and I already hear a difference in my voice. Honestly I could go on and on but in closing I would recommend Katy to anyone. She's the best.

Katy provided a super introduction to singing lessons!

While Syd was initially a little reticent, Katy immediately made her feel at ease, and within five minutes, they had bonded and Syd was singing her little heart out. She can't wait to return to the next lesson.
