I am an enthusiastic English teacher by profession, but I have been a natural teacher my whole life. I love working with young people, especially teenagers! I homeschooled by own children for 5 years after I got my bachelor's degree in psychology. However, in 2018 when I received my Master's in the Art of Teaching then I became a high school English teacher and also began teaching students from other countries online. I have my TESOL certificate which means I am certified to teach students English online if it is their second language. I would say though that my passion lies in teaching great novels. I have experience teaching everything from Lord of the Flies, Animal Farm and The Giver to Shakespeare! If it is taught in American schools and considered part of the cannon of great literature, then I want to teach it! Novels provide a platform to improve upon and learn so many different skills for reading and writing, all while learning a great story and empathizing with great characters. Novels offer vocabulary, research, reading comprehension, writing skills development, understanding story and plot as well as speaking, listening and discussion skills. For any state's standards, a great novel can hit nearly all standards in one swipe! Although, I do love teaching novels, I would say my strength as a teacher lies in my desire to meet a student where they are and grow them in a way that best fits their learning style and personality. Remember, that background in psychology I mentioned in the first paragraph? I think it is what provides me with an upper hand to work with a widely diverse population and grow each student's English skills where and how is best for them! Don't like novels? No problem! I will work to find engaging material that appeals to you!
