*** Location *** Inland Empire California I have been teaching young students piano since 2012. I have completed my education for a music education degree, and am the former president of the Cal State Piano Society. I have been playing piano for many years and love every aspect of music. My goal is to pass my passion for music onto my students, and allow them to develop a deep appreciation and understanding for all genres. *** Lesson Details *** I am a strong believer in making the learning process fun and enjoyable. I want my students to be motivated to learn and practice as much as possible. My teaching style consists of starting with the basics (technique, theory, and reading music) then graduating to style and phrasing. My students will always leave our lessons feeling accomplished and confident. Learning an instrument is hard work, but with enough effort and commitment, anything is possible! *** How Long of a Lesson? *** For very young beginners, I recommend 15 minutes. For beginners, I recommend 30 minutes. For intermediate, we can do 30 to 45 to 60 minutes. For advanced, you would benefit from 45 to 60 minutes. If you are beginner and want to have a 45 or 60 minute lesson, each lesson will focus on any of these categories: technique, repertoire, theory, ear training, and listening. ***Cancellation Policy*** Please notify me at least 24 HOURS before the lesson if you need to cancel to avoid charges. I may or may not be able to reschedule, and I will allow up to one month for a makeup lesson. *** Studio Equipment *** Baldwin Upright Piano Various Piano Books Metronome Internet access for resources *** Travel Equipment *** I expect all music students to provide a piano and the required materials (i.e. metronome and specific music books) Tutoring: Please provide the class work, assignments, and projects for the subjects that need tutoring (if possible). *** Specialties *** I believe that technique is very important when it comes to piano. I start with teaching the basic scales, hand positions, and good posture. Then I begin teaching music theory, in which the student learns how to read notes, rhythms, dynamics, etc. Once the student becomes proficient in reading and technique, I give them more difficult pieces in order to work on style, voicing, and phrasing.

Katie is great! She is very kind and patient. She related to my child by asking certain questions to get to know her and what she wanted to do and her goals with singing. She is very good about making sure my child understood what she was teaching.

The Redlands Conservatory of Arts and Sciences

At the Redlands Conservatory, I run a piano studio where I teach half an hour piano lessons. Most of my students, here, are between the ages of 4 and 16. . My students are expected to read and perform accurate rhythms. We strive to achieve perfect technique and work hard in training the ear. We use the fundamentals of ear training (solfege: do re mi fa sol la ti do) to better hear and memorize the melodic line. My students will learn to read and sing solfege, without the use of piano. This strengthens them as musicians and gives them a better understanding of their music. The Conservatory also sends me to Azure Hills and Loma Linda Academy to teach music in the preschool classes. In these classes, the students learn solfege, rhythm, musical vocabulary, and music history during fun, interactive games. At Azure Hills, I run a children's choir where we perform songs twice a year.
