Harp with Katie S.

My name is Katie. I graduated from BYU-Idaho with a Bachelors degree in Music emphasizing Harp Performance and Piano Pedagogy in 2012. I have been playing the piano since I was 6 years old, and the harp since I was 11. I have taught piano and harp to children of all ages since I was a Junior in High School. I have also taught music lessons to children with special needs. I have performed the Harp Professionally for the University President and the Mayor of Rexburg, Idaho as well as during many celebrations, weddings, funerals, banquets, and graduations. I have also performed with orchestras, symphonies, and smaller ensemble groups. My love for music has transformed into a love for teaching Music. I love seeing the excitement as little children play their very first song on the harp or piano. I love seeing their glowing faces when they have finished a recital or conquered a really difficult piece. I have so much fun teaching students elements that can sometimes be difficult to understand, like rhythm and music theory. Through my many years of performing and teaching, I have learned different techniques that allow me to switch gears on the spot to help a student understand a specific concept. I am well versed with the most popular brands of Piano Method Books like Faber, Alfred, Bastien, and Carol Matz. I am also comfortable setting a specific lesson plan for Harp students in regards to whether the student wants to play classically or play the traditional folk songs. Whatever your student wants to learn, I am confident that I can help them reach their goals. If your student is young and a bit wriggly, I like using toys and even my pets to help keep the students focused. I have 2 bunnies and 2 dogs that so far all of my students love! Sometimes a favorite stuffed animal is also helpful for the shy students to help them feel comfortable playing with me and talking to me. I have children of my own ages; 8, 7, and 4 which means I have an endless supply of fun toys and games to share with my students! For the older more mature students, I am comfortable helping them perform competitively and play advanced 'showy' pieces. I hope I can meet you in lesson soon! Thank you, Katie
