Flute with Kateri S.

Hi! I have been playing flute for about 15 years, and clarinet for about 10. I have been teaching flute for over 12 years, and clarinet for 8. I was an elementary and middle school music teacher for 8 years, and taught beginner through intermediate instrumental music students on a variety of instruments. I have experience working with students from kindergarten through 12th grade. I have successfully helped students prepare for auditions into select ensembles and college music programs. A flute lesson with me begins with a warm-up designed to help the student practice the skill he or she is struggling with the most. Some of my students begin with tone exercises, some begin with fingering or note-reading exercises. Then, the student will either work out of a lesson book such as the Rubank series or work on an etude. Advanced students will use the Trevor Wye lesson series and Taffanel and Gaubert fingering exercises. Then, the student will work on a solo piece. If the student belongs to a school or performing ensemble, we will work on that music as well. The lesson ends with a duet with me, sometimes sight-read and sometimes rehearsed in advance, to practice ensemble performance techniques. Lessons can be 30, 45 or 60 minutes and will be tailored to meet the student's individual needs. My college flute playing experience included marching band, symphonic band and orchestra. I have played works for composers including Percy Grainger and Anton Dvorak. My post-college playing experience is mostly playing in pit orchestras for school or community theaters.
