Flute with Kasumi L.

I have been a flute teacher for forty years with many outstanding and nationally award-winning students but Kasumi stands out among my favorite students and performers. I was so lucky to have Kasumi start in 6th grade and continue through high school with me. Along the way she picked up many awards through the Seattle Flute Society, the Seattle Young Artists, and the Seattle Youth Symphony where she was first chair in every orchestra. Her high school career culminated in being selected to attend the very prestigious Eastman School of Music with a very generous scholarship. Kasumi has a sparkly personality and that sparkle shines in her playing. Building on a solid musical and technical base she adds her own distinctive ideas and nuances to create a personal performance. Having been part of the creative team to produce The United States Army Field Band Flute Fundamentals DVD, Kasumi is well equipped to teach beginners who have never opened a flute case to serious students hoping for a musical career- and to make it fun!

Kasumi has been a colleague of mine since our time together at Eastman. Her knowledge of flute pedagogy and technique is impressive and she plays with warmth and clarity. However, it is her enthusiasm, kindness, and patience that make her a joy to work with, both for students and colleagues. I would highly recommend Kasumi to anyone considering flute lessons!
