Lessons consist of instructions for scales, exercises, pieces and theory. Basics are required of every student... but once these have been mastered... students can determine their direction... classical or more popular variety. Recital in June annually includes award ceremony for excellence in pieces completed, Theory, practice time and book completions. Every effort is made to make Piano an enjoyable and rewarding experience. 45 minute time slots are preferred for beginners and early intermediate. 60 minutes required for late intermediate and advanced.

About Karen S.

I hold a Bachelor of Music Education Degree from Misericordia University in Dallas, PA. I have studied piano with Gisa Adler at New School of Music in Philadelphia, PA. I taught public school in the Conestoga Valley School District in Lancaster County, PA and I have taught private piano for over ten years.
I love music and I love teaching - seeing my students progress and reach their goals. I believe music should be a pleasant experience and a demanding and ill - spirited teacher can ruin a student. I am NOT one of these. You will find me patient and supportive.

*** Lesson Details ***
To be an accomplished pianist you must learn all the basics well. These include music symbology which enables you to read music so you can translate it into the sound on the piano. In order to play the music written on the page you must train your fingers to do what you need them to do - so you will have finger exercises and scales to practice to enable to play pieces/songs you like. In order to accomplish all this we will use a piano method designed to teach you these things little by little so you won't get overwhelmed. One step at a time towards your goal - self enjoyment, being the life of the party, accompany the chorus, play the songs you hear on the radio or perhaps even become a renowned pianist on stage or in the theater. Whatever your goal you will need to practice and you must have a piano or at least a keyboard. The method we use will depend on the student's age, reading level, past experience with piano or other instruments and I will take into consideration your goals. If you are interested in popular music there will be a point (when you are ready) when you will be able to add this type of music to the lesson music. How quickly you grow musically depends greatly on the quality of your practice time - thus you will determine your rate of progress.

*** Travel Equipment ***
I like to purchase new materials myself for the student based on their needs at the time. They need a decent notebook for listing practice items. I usually have the method book, with note-speller for beginners, theory for more advanced, and additional pieces (non-method) as appropriate. Hanon is a staple. I use various other materials to remedy finger technique and rhythm issues as learned from my teachers and those devised by myself.

*** Specialties ***
I prefer to use a variety of materials. At the first lesson I assess reading ability, interest, physical ability and attention span to determine what materials are appropriate for the student. All students will learn scales, finger exercises, pieces and theory. I have used Thompson, Schaum, Pace, Fletcher and Alfred in my teaching - and frequently a combination there-of.

I had to cancel my granddaughter's piano lessons with Karen S. due to family and personal reasons associated with the limitations and restrictions imposed as a result of the coronavirus outbreak. Karen is an excellent piano instructor. She has a kind and approachable manner, with just the right mix of friendliness and professionalism. My 11-year-old granddaughter loved taking lessons from Karen. When my granddaughter applied for entrance as a piano major at a school of the arts, Karen provided her with exceptional assistance and support both preparing for her acceptance into the school and also enabling my granddaughter's advancing piano proficiency and learning. I recommend Karen to anyone looking for piano lessons with a kind, caring and extremely knowledgeable and talented piano instructor.

Karen and I shared one of those truly remarkable situations, we hit it off right away! We found out we have many things in common, but I also found that her style of teaching fits me perfectly . I left my lesson knowing I had made the right decision in returning to the piano. Looking forward to doing something just for myself...with Karen's help.

I am enjoying Karen's teaching each week. She is pleasant, patient, and creative in her instruction when she senses I need a new approach to learning the next lesson. Karen reviews what was covered in the last session, is communicative throughout the lesson, provides pointers to overcome my obstacles to learning, and presents new material as it makes sense for my progression. I look forward to my next lesson.

Karen is one of the best, if not the best Teacher one could ever have. She
is patient, answers all questions and give positive advise, I am very happy with her teaching and I know that I made the right choice in selecting her.

The reason, I did not respond when you initial inquired about piano lessons, is because it was too soon to make an accurate statement.

Karen is an excellent piano teacher. She is super-skilled and proficient. She is very patient and relates very well to my 9-year-old granddaughter, who is progressing rapidly with her beginner piano lessons. We are both perfectly happy with Karen.
