I have experience teaching both beginning and intermediate piano and beginning voice. I enjoy working with students of all ages and helping them develop as musicians. I am patient and understanding and believe that students need to feel comfortable with a teacher to optimize the learning experience.
I studied private piano into my high school years and studied organ and voice in college where I was a vocal soloist. I attended Concordia College, Ann Arbor, Mi and received my BA in Music Education from Buena Vista University in Storm Lake, Iowa
I have accompanied both Middle School and High School Choirs and instrumentalists, played organ and directed church choirs. I currently am a substitute organist. I enjoy working with students one on one. I recently moved to La Porte so took a break from teaching for a few months but am ready to get back to work. Sharing music is a great joy.
I especially love playing keyboard because of its expressive nature, the soft and loud, the sweetly and the contemplative. It brings me pleasure especially when a challenging piece has been mastered.
*** Lesson Details ***
I attempt to adapt lessons so each student can be successful. A variety of curriculum is used based on student's needs and the basic curriculum is supplemented with additional material to reinforce the lessons being taught. Each piano lesson begins with reviewing material from the previous lesson and then learning new pieces, including technique and theory as appropriate to the music. Practicing is an essential part of the learning process. Students are given practical ideas on how to make practicing more effective and enjoyable.
*** Studio Equipment ***
Living Room: piano, couches and chair, room for parents to wait for students in dining room or living room
*** Travel Equipment ***
Students need to provide a piano in a quiet place free of distractions.
I play for worship services in the La Porte area when hired to substitute.
Play for weekly services, preparing music appropriate to the season and weekly themes.
Accompanied Middle School Choirs as well as individuals who attend Solo and Ensemble competitions, both vocal and instrumental.

Very nice and professional
First lesson for 8 year old but she really liked Karen and felt comfortable with all they did. She cam home with confidence.
She has learned a lot from Karen and is looking forward to every lesson.
Very professional and pleasant, but behind in technology
We feel like Karen is a wonderful person, pleasant, and very nice. However, she is rather old fashioned in her teaching, which is fine for some, just not us! Her technology is behind, so learning newer music and practice for newer shows, etc, is very difficult. If we were learning to read music and play the piano, Karen would be great, I am sure.
Too soon to evaluate as I have had a limited number of lessons.
Everything is going well, however, I do have to drive quite a distance to get there, which is a negative.
This has been a WONDERFUL EXPERIENCE!
Karen is GREAT! She keeps my daughter focused and she is getting better with every lesson. My daughter has a a habit of playing to fast and Karen does not scold her for this but she gives her positive feedback and tells her how she is getting better and it has made a big difference.
My daughter has recently begun lessons with Karen. She has completed about 10 weeks of her lessons. Karen and my daughter (14) work very well together and Karen is very patient. I would highly recommend Karen, she would be good with student of any age from young to adult.+ Read More
Karen is a very good instructor. She is very approachable and demonstrates interest in my progress. I also appreciate how she keeps challenging me to learn more each week. Sometimes I feel in over my head but I grateful for the exposure.

Karens done a great job of creating a curriculum based on what I want to learn and improve on. She teaches with patience and humor, and offers lots of positive feedback to help build confidence. I'm very happy with Karen and look forward to continuing my classes with her.
