I teach all my lessons with a guiding principle always at the back of my mind- getting students from every level to connect with Music "capital M", which to me means getting to the core of honest self-expression, emotional intent, and one's most authentic, creative self behind an instrument. Technique for me is just a means to an end, which is why I emphasize play and improvisation over mindless exercises or rote technical practice. While I make sure that my students don't skimp on any fundamentals, I always make sure to tie it all back to a students "why" for getting into music in the first place. I prefer to individually tailor my lessons to each student's goals and unique learning habits/abilities, and seek to work on material that keeps FUN at the forefront! But beware..I have a small tolerance for students who don't put in the practice, or lack the dedication to achieve results. All I can give provide you are the keys and guiding tools; students have to be motivated and committed to their own learning goals to stay the course. I'm comfortable teaching jazz, pop, rock, gospel, classical, and basic piano as well as jazz composition/arranging, songwriting, and more. My ultimate goal is to bring out the hidden musical master of every level or ability.

Hey, I'm Julian! 
I'm a pianist, composer, bandleader, and educator based in Philadelphia and Music is my Life! I love teaching but also learning..the endless process of discovery that music offers me on a daily basis reminds me to stay humble and remember there is always more to learn. I try to impart this joy and sense of discovery to EVERY student I encounter, no matter their age or skill level. 
I lead and write music for my own group, a jazz quintet called The Julian Hartwell Project, and teach during the academic year at Temple University as adjunct faculty. I look forward to teaching you and am on stand-by waiting for any questions you may have!
