    About Julia P.

I'm a passionate professional vocalist and a fourth generation music educator. With 20+ years of professional performing, coaching and teaching experience under my belt, I emphasize rhythm and musicality alongside technique and note reading. I always set myself the goal of learning what makes a musician sound "right," and not just "good" in a particular genre. This versatility has made me extremely employable as an artist, and, I think, uniquely qualified to teach. I believe that students will work harder on music that moves them, and I always encourage students to suggest songs that they care about. Good technique(s) can be applied to any repertoire! Note: I believe that regular weekly lessons are essential to establishing good habits and making progress. As a result, I can only accept students who are interested in taking a lesson each week. Requests for biweekly lessons will regretfully be denied. Thanks!

Julia is an amazing piano teacher who is always more than accommodating with her schedule. I love the way she teaches and she always uses great analogies to help me understand the lesson better. I am an adult who has never played piano and she has really made the learning experience fun for me. I look forward to continuing my lessons with her. Highly recommend!!

    Experience

Live and Studio Vocalist, Instructor and Coach

    Apr, 1992 - Present

    Desert Home Music

I have been touring with live theatre and bands ever since I finished college. In the last few years, I have been focusing on JPJQ (Quartet), a jazz band that specializes in traditional jazz arrangements of modern songs (think Postmodern Jukebox with a Dixieland twist!) I am also a featured vocalist, occasionally returning to Vancouver, BC to perform or record with Rollaway/Benton Roark Band (southern rock original band) and in Oregon with Freedom Street (Blues and Top 40 cover band). While I have been teaching and coaching my fellow performers on a casual basis for years, since I moved to the Northwest, first in Vancouver, Canada, and now in Portland, I have finally been able to develop my own studio. I love being able to follow a student through the process of learning to sing in a way I never got to do as a short term coach!

    Voice and Piano Teacher

    Sep, 2017 - Jun, 2019

    Allegro School of Music

I loved teaching at Allegro! I only left because my private teaching business has gotten too busy!

    Voice, Piano, Ukulele Teacher

    Mar, 2016 - Aug, 2017

    Studios, Wilsonville, OR

Music Man Studios offers a wide range of instruments, and employs teachers with a variety of teaching styles and philosophies to make the best matches for their students. I have been lucky enough to teach voice, piano and ukulele here and enjoy the supportive, small-town atmosphere and sense of their place in the community.

    Voice, Piano, Ukulele Instructor

    Nov, 2015 - Jul, 2017

    Vancouver Music Academy

Teaching in a “strip mall music school” in Vancouver, WA. Here, my students range in age from 5yrs – adults, studying piano, voice and ukulele. This school expanded and rebranded in 2017 (It was previously known as Musical Beginnings, in a smaller location a few blocks away.)

Voice, Piano, Ukulele, Technique & Performance Stylings Teacher

    Jan, 2015 - Aug, 2017

    Between The Lines Music

I have recently launched this School of Music with my husband, in an office space in Downtown Portland. I offer voice lessons similar to my home studio, as well as offering in-home lessons as needed. I am also developing my business to teaching experienced musicians in band leading skills, doing performance coaching and workshops in business development. With my husband, we plan to offer combo classes as well.
