About Julia L.

(31)
I have been playing the piano for 24 years and the viola for 17 years, and have been classically trained in both. Since I was 18th I have participated in many well-known music festivals and masterclasses, and have performed in Taiwan, China, Singapore, Germany, Canada, the Czech Republic, Austria, Korea, and the United States. Currently, I am working on my performance degree in orchestra studies at Indiana University. In addition, I received my Performer’s Diploma in viola performance in 2020, also from IU, and a master’s degree from the New England Conservatory in Boston in 2018. Born in Taiwan in 1993, I started learning the piano at the age of 3 and later began playing the viola at the age of 10. Following my studies in Taiwan, I moved to Singapore to pursue my bachelor’s degree at the National University of Singapore/Yong Siew Toh Conservatory. In 2016, I moved to Boston and studied at New England Conservatory, where I earned my master’s degree. I currently just finished my Performer’s Diploma at Indiana University and am pursuing another PD specifically in orchestra studies. Over the years, I have won several awards and prizes such as the 1st prize at the National Taiwan Music Competition in chamber music categories in 2008, 2009, 2011 and the Artistic Excellence Award from Jacobs School of Music in 2018. In 2017, my string quartet was selected to perform in Jordan Hall for the Borromeo Quartet’s Beethoven Seminar project in Boston. My performances have taken me across the globe, spanning nine countries and three continents. Orchestrally, I have auditioned for and been accepted for positions with the Evansville Philharmonic Orchestra, Owensboro Symphony Orchestra, Chicago Civic Orchestra, and Illinois Symphony Orchestra. My plan is to perform and teach at the same time because I strongly believe that having a teacher who actively performs can better maintain their technique which is a huge benefit for their students. Besides playing the viola and piano, I enjoy gourmet cooking and sharing my culinary creations with others. Lesson Details: When I teach, I strive to help students learn the most efficient practice methods and to develop a healthy attitude towards learning music. Your progression on the instrument is what will take you to the next step. Either playing solo and chamber and orchestra have the same core values: beautiful tone production, fine intonation, pure rhythm, expressive playing, knowledge of musical styles, acute listening, excellent ensemble skills. If you study with me, I will help you master these concepts and techniques at your own pace and help you find your own musical voice through playing the viola/piano. I look forward to working with and learning more about my students :)

Extremely patient and great at explaining difficult tasks and how to practice sections in the pieces I struggle with.

My granddaughter (Elizabeth) wanted viola lessons to improve her playing with her middle school strings class. We looked on line and found TakeLessons. Then we read the resumes of different instructors and finally chose Julia L. because viola was her primary instrument which she learned to play very early as a young student. We also read from her resume that she majored in music on viola in college, has won awards in competitions, is a current performer as well as a viola instructor for traditional and Suzuki methods. Julia has been an EXCELLENT choice for my granddaughter. She is professional, prompt, prepared, patient. Her instructions are precise and clear. She gives my granddaughter great hints and tips to help her remember pointers given during the lesson. I am very, very pleased with Julia as my granddaughter’s instructor. Elizabeth’s comment was “Julia is so good, I could never have found a teacher that great, even if I had taken lessons in person!”
