Learn the basics of music performance from a seasoned musician and performer

Music performance includes the methods of bringing a piece to an audience. It includes acting, body language, tone and expression in the voice. It also includes discussions of what the song means to the performer and how they would like to share that. I recommend adults take from 45 minute to 1 hour lessons weekly for skill building.

    About Julia V.

I teach adult students and mature young people who want to learn with fun and enthusiasm and gain real singing craft. Skills include vocal exercises that fit your current needs and five steps to address vocal problems. I work with the body as an expressive instrument building strength, posture and acting ability. With my performing experience I'll take you on a journey to learn how a singer can fill a concert hall with sound (louder than an orchestra) or spin out a soft high note. My journey started with winning a highschool vocal contest, graduating with a BA in vocal performance from Western Washington University and an MA thru the Opera Department of the Boston and New England Conservatories. I performed in oratorio, recitals and new works internationally. I've toured educational programs, been a MusikGarten teacher and Suzuki Parent of twins. I love to develop musical ability in all ages! My students have successful auditions for college opera and music theater programs, and as soloists. Students gain a larger vocal range and an easy, natural way of singing whether it is as a soloist in a band or choir. Together we harness the joy of singing to build a solid technique. *** What is a lesson like? **** I am persistent and positive! Skills include vocal exercises that fit student's current needs and five steps to address vocal problems. I work with the body as an expressive instrument building strength, posture and acting ability. I am a resourceful and experienced teacher who understands the process of becoming a singer. I believe that a sense of fun and play helps you to accomplish your goals quickly. Beginners will learn how the voice works, the basics of breathing to support their sound, how to take care of and develop an instrument which is a part of the body. We will learn music; familiar songs will become stronger, new songs will be learned and memorized and organized so that you have just the right songs for future performances. Songs that are more complex and challenging are suggested as the student is ready. Understanding music theory and sing-reading help in learning songs and give confidence in ensembles. Advanced students focus both on trouble spots and becoming complete performers. Learn to understand the changes that voices naturally go thru at different ages. I look forward to giving you my full focus and celebrating your growth and accomplishments! *** On-Line Lessons *** Students need a fast internet connection. I use the free App fortelessons for a simultaneous music sharing platform. I provide a basic library of vocal music and recommend targeted books for each student. Students may join Newzik to share scores on an iPad with a stylus pen and/or should plan to print out their current songs in order to mark their scores. Please provide a keyboard if possible, strong internet connection, two devices if possible: one for the lesson and one to pull up music scores, videos and accompaniments. A stand to hold your device securely, a notebook and pencil as well as a low distraction environment. *** Teacher's Studio Equipment *** High quality keyboard. Headphones and Blue Yeti mic Macbook M2 iPad score reader iPhone Library of vocal, piano and music theory books Music stand Subscriptions to Appcompanist, Newzik, IMSLP *** Specialties *** As an opera and musical theater, oratorio singer, I help singers of all levels improve within their genre from popular music to opera. A good singing technique will help performers in any style stay healthy and enjoy an expressive singing instrument.

Our daughter (Music Education major specializing in voice and flute) had a wonderful experience working with Julia! She had 90-120 minute sessions that included early-college level music theory, vocal exercises, and piano. Julia communicated quickly and was very flexible with lesson times. She was so easy to work with! We would highly recommend her to other students.
