Clarinet with Julia A.

I am a freelance clarinetist and teacher based in the Chicago Area, and I have just finished my undergrad, completing a dual degree program in clarinet performance (BM) and environmental science (BA) at Northwestern University. I try to meet each student where they are in terms of how they are progressing and what their goals are for learning clarinet, whether that be learning how to play a song, band music, or even to just build technique! My background in research and STEM has given me a unique perspective on clarinet. In my own studies, explaining things in very technical, clear terms has been very helpful in learning proper posture, breathing, and technique, and I'd like to think it translates well to my teaching too. Performance-wise, my passion lies in new music and chamber music, and I love listening to and exploring the works of contemporary composers. New music offers opportunities to collaborate with composers and musicians alike, making it one of the most exciting parts of the field. But that's not to say I don't love the classics too! Overall, I am all about adaptive teaching and helping every one of my students find music they are excited to learn and perform.
