I am a technique-focused teacher insofar as making sure any student of mine is avoiding bad and sometimes unhealthy habits in their playing. I do, however, try to find fun ways to work on technique, with the end goal being playing repertoire that is fun for the student. I believe technical exercises have their place in learning any instrument, but that it's important to spend the majority of your practice time on material which is ultimately enjoyable to play.

I do have certain sets of books I like to follow depending on the student's interests, but I am always happy to tweak the lesson plan to fit the student's needs.
In my current position at Vanderbilt, I teach music technology classes, and I am involved in the occasional performance with other faculty members as a classical guitarist. Outside of that, I run a small mixing studio called Tango Sound Studios. I'm also an avid 3D printing enthusiast and lover of indie sci-fi books.

About Joshua S.

Hi there! My name is Josh, and I'd love to be your guitar teacher! I've been playing guitar since I was eight, starting out playing rock and roll, then focusing on classical training for my college career. In both undergraduate and graduate school, I studied classical composition as a classical guitarist, covering repertoire spanning from the Renaissance through modern solo and ensemble guitar works, and completed a thesis on Bossa Nova music in modern composition. I never lost the love for heavier music, though, and my repertoire today covers a broad range of music, from the lute suites of Bach to the modern Bossa of Marco Pereira, and from the classic rock of the Eagles to the modern hard rock of bands like Avenged Sevenfold.

My son Jake wanted to learn some Boston songs that my husband always plays, and Josh was the perfect teacher for him! Jake had been playing 2 years when we found Josh. I was impressed by his ability to make stuff like technique and scales fun for students. Highly recommend!

My middle son took an interest in classical guitar and Josh was perfect to get him going. We bought the books recommended by Josh which gave my son the basics. Josh follows the pace of the student and was flexible when teaching from books.

I wanted to learn more than just the basic chords and Josh was a great teacher! He explains things in a way that's easy to understand. I took guitar lessons when I was little and he helped me to build on what I already knew. He also encouraged me to pick songs I wanted to learn rather than stick to a book. Scheduling was easy and he's really responsive to messages.
