My love of music began early on from the time I was a child. My parents' wide appreciation of different music genres was reflected in all the varied albums which landed on their constantly rotating turntable. It wasn't long before I started taking piano lessons as my first introduction to creating music. By the time I was 15, I realized that I had a greater attraction to the guitar. I then began a journey that has lasted around 26 years to date. Most of my knowledge consists of a combination of self study, college courses and many excellent teachers along the way. I took several courses at San Francisco Community College to become acquainted with music fundamentals, theory and harmony. I was able to study with noted players such as Jim Campilongo (Nora Jones), Reeves Gabrels (David Bowie, Nine Inch Nails), Audley Freed (Black Crowes, Dixie Chicks), Jorma Kaukonen (Jefferson Airplane, Hot Tuna), Warren Haynes (Gov't Mule, Allman Brothers), Richard Thompson, Martin Simpson, Larry Campbell (Bob Dylan, Levon Helm,Phil Lesh), and San Francisco Jazz Guitarist Jeff Massanari. Not long after moving to Nashville, I took an instructor position at The Main Stage, a music and dance school located in Springfield, TN. I taught a wide range of children (ages 5-17) and adults there for several years. I bring years of experience and study when I meet with students to formulate a specific, tailored program to help them get started playing as quickly as possible. I think it's important to not only learn theory and technique but also to learn the songs that attract one to the instrument in the first place. Additionally, I've learned many different styles of guitar (both acoustic and electric) ranging from rock and metal to country, folk, bluegrass and funk. I can help a student decipher the techniques behind many of the popular riffs and licks that catch their ear. *** Lesson Details *** When I meet new students for the first time, I make it a point to ask them about their own musical interests and goals. I like to find out what inspires them to want to play guitar. I combine teaching important fundamentals with their interests (say, learning their favorite song). We set manageable goal posts for each week so a student can witness their progress. From there, we will work towards achieving the next goal until the task is complete and they can see the payoff (and so can their family and friends). I always use an approach which combines patience and lots of encouragement. Generally speaking, I have a very laid back personality but I am firm about meeting the requirements that are set with each lesson. Daily practice is important if there is going to be progress. Students can expect to be playing some of their favorite songs quickly when they put in the time. I use method books which differ depending on the age and interests of the student. I combine exercises which acquaint a student with theory and reading along with learning one's favorite songs. After 3 months, a student will be able to know enough open position chords to play many of these songs. After 6 months, a student will be able to grasp basic music fundamentals and attain basic level reading skills. *** Studio Equipment *** Living room or den/music room w/ guitar, amp, cables, and seating for parents in both locations *** Travel Equipment *** I can provide a guitar, amp, music stand and cable though I would strongly recommend to the student they purchase their own for practical purposes. *** Specialties *** I teach rock, funk, country and blues electric styles. I also teach fingerpicking and flatpicking acoustic styles.
