I have been performing in various ensembles at Kansas State University since my freshman year in 2015. I will be graduating in May 2019 after having spent years performing in ensembles such as:

I began learning the saxophone in 5th grade, nearly 14 years ago! Never would I have guessed that I would have the privilege of making music my career. I primarily work as a composer and teacher. Currently, I'm in the process of obtaining my master's degree in composition from the University of Houston. I am most familiar with classical saxophone studies, though I have played jazz and contemporary music too.

I've been teaching saxophone for six years now. I have segmented my teachings into the following:

Technical Work: 

It is so important to master the fundamentals, and this means scales and patterns! Learning all of the major and minor scales is a great start to learning new music, and will be the first goal for my students. Included in technical work is proper cleaning and care for the instrument, appropriate breathing, and physical habits like as posture. 

Repertoire: 

The best part about learning a new instrument is playing music that excited you as a performer! I have a wide knowledge of standard music for all saxophone players, from beginners to advanced. Of course, I'm always willing to help you learn your own favorite music.

And finally, Musicality:

The goal of any musician is to play beautiful music! There is a lot of work to be done in the two areas above, but you must learn more than the notes on the page to be great. You will learn about phrasing, dynamics, and articulation in ways that will enhance your performance abilities.

In addition to these segments of our lesson time, we can work toward new music, specific goals, or auditions you may be pursuing. I cannot wait to start working together!

Hello! Are you ready to dive into the musical world of the saxophone!?!

My name is Joshua, a teacher, composer, and performer. I am proficient in saxophone, and competent in flute, clarinet, composition, and piano. My Bachelor of Music degree comes from Kansas State University in the area of Music Composition. 

I have a very unique background, coming from the small town of Downs, Kansas. There, I had extensive amounts of experience working with children as a lifeguard, saxophone teacher, and teacher's assistant!

I run my lessons based on what YOU want to learn! We can build the fundamental skills of your instrument while exploring music YOU enjoy! I have played classical, jazz, pep, and modern saxophone, and as a composer I am exposed to many different styles of music. 

Music is so much more than notes on a page. It is expression, emotion, feeling...
And I understand that as your teacher, it is my job to equip you with the skills needed to fulfill the true music you want to create!
