As a composer of new music, it is essential to support the local community of musicians through lessons which support individual interests and patiently encourage progress at every level. I teach all ages and can work with any level of skill in terms of instrument ability, music theory, or music engraving. If you sing, play an instrument, or are interested in the manipulation of sound: composition lessons are for you!

In a typical lesson we will begin to develop a new project or analyze a work in progress. Students can expect composition games and exercises with pen and paper for each lesson. If you have Engraving/DAW software like Finale, Sibelius, Ableton, or Logic we will utilize that for games and projects. Helping each student develop their compositional style while increasing their knowledge of music theory, improvisation, and engraving skills are my main goals.

Whether you would like to increase your music theory knowledge, learn how to write music, arrange a song, hone your engraving skills, or experiment with sound, I am able to help! If you are a more advanced student, we can talk about things like portfolios for the Conservatory and what is expected to begin your career in music.

If you are pursuing compositional knowledge in the field of music production or commercial music, we will work with that in mind. I am well versed in ProTools and Logic, and proficient with Ableton!

I am a recent graduate of Cal State San Bernardino with degrees in Music Composition and Music Technology. I have premiered 3 pieces for full orchestra with CSUSB and written several chamber pieces for various instrumentation. Arrangements include those for jazz combo, Big Band, as well as classical instrumentation. I also have experience creating music for video games and film. Currently, I am focused on the integration of the full spectrum of electronic and acoustic instruments.

If writing music has ever interested you please contact me for a lesson, I will help you develop your skills and make sure you learn something new!

About Josh R.

I am a Composer, Songwriter, Guitarist, Bassist, and Keyboard/Synth player. My passion is modern music and art with a focus on excellence and attention to detail. I love music of all genres from old to modern, high class to low brow, and seek to instill a similar appreciation in my students. Encouraging pupils to achieve and create new goals is my passion.

My educational background is split between the composition of music and the study of music technology, allowing for a broader range of study should the student desire. Recipient of BA in Music Composition and BA in Music Technology, Cum Laude.

I have been playing and teaching for the past 10 years and can guide students through their own musical journey. I can teach students to read/write music and pursue the study of music with academic rigor, to learn how to create contemporary music using chord sheets, or both depending on the goals and preference of the student.

Currently I play bass guitar in a modern Jazz/Neo-Soul band where we perform original songs as well as arrangements of "jazz standards", improvise in response to various prompts, graphic scores, art pieces, and perform for community events.

Ive really enjoyed my experiences with Josh. He is well versed in all styles of composition and specializes in more modern avant-garde styles. Our lessons in modern counterpoint have really improved my harmonizations skills and expanded what I thought was capable for chords in a band setting.(i.e. jazz big band, concert band, orchestra, etc.)
