About Joseph S.

I am a professional conductor, professor, singer, and teacher. I have a Doctor of Music in conducting from Texas Tech University, a Masters of Music Education from the University of Illinois, and a Bachelor of Music Performance and Bachelor of English from Luther College. I have conducted college, secondary, community, church, and professional ensembles, and I have taught students of all ability, education, and age levels. My conducting and performing experiences have taken me to three continents, a dozen countries, and around the United States.

Students can expect to receive a personalized curriculum built to suit their experience level and needs. Whether you're just starting to learn about the art of conducting or you're an experienced veteran looking for a few extra tips and tricks to improve your practice, I can help you increase the efficiency and artistry of your gesture, score study and preparation, and verbal instruction.

I am passionate about the need for strong conducting technique and leadership for amateur ensembles, who often benefit the most from strong gesture. I am glad to work with adult ensemble leaders who want to improve the experience for their members!

Dr. Svendsen is an outstanding professor! He is knowledgeable and patient with his students, and makes sure that they understand the concepts being taught before continuing on. Not just in conducting, but in music and choral studies as well!
