I work to tailor my instruction to each student’s needs, interests, and learning style. Every student is different, and every student wants something different out of their lessons. There are some things that I work on with every student: tone, intonation, vibrato, technique, repertoire, etc., but I also gauge what a student wants to learn about the saxophone and music making and make it my goal to help them reach their musical goals, whatever they may be. I strive to make sure that my students are set up for success in all of their musical endeavors.

About Joseph L.

I am a saxophonist and educator in Nacogdoches, TX, and I am currently pursuing a Performing Artist Certificate in Saxophone Performance at Stephen F. Austin State University. Before I moved to TX, I lived most of my life in GA; I earned my Bachelors degree in Music Education at the University of Georgia, and my Masters degree in Saxophone Performance at Georgia State University. I have had the great privilege to study privately under Connie Frigo, Jan Berry Baker, and Nathan Nabb; I have also had the great honor of studying with world-renowned saxophonist and pedagogue Fred Hemke, as well as performing in masterclasses taught by Allison Adams, Claude Delangle, Timothy McAllister, Otis Murphy, Phil Pierick, Debra Richtmeyer, John Sampen, Dale Underwood, and Vladislav Vals.

One of my favorite parts of being a saxophonist is traveling to conferences to perform and watch lectures, recitals, and masterclasses by world class musicians. I have performed at conferences in Georgia, Texas, Missouri, Virginia, and Mississippi, and I have premiered several new solo, chamber, and full band works at these events. Recently, I had the honor of performing a concerto with the Georgia State University Wind Ensemble, as well as winning the GSU 2020 Dean’s Award. Additionally, I have been a Prizewinner in the 2019 GSU Honors Recital, 2019 NASA Region 6 Quartet Competition, and 2018 Georgia MTNA Young Artist and Chamber Music Competitions.

Besides performing and traveling, I absolutely love teaching music. I have taught students whose ages have ranged from 4-31, and an assortment of subjects including saxophone, mellophone, chamber music, band (elementary-college), indoor drumline, dance, general music, music theory, and even rock music. I have taught beginners, college music majors, and everything in between. In addition to studying saxophone, I studied cello at collegiate level. I also have six years of drum corps performing experience: four summers with the Bluecoats (2014-2017) and two summers with Atlanta CV (2011-2012). In the past, my students have received honors in the GMEA Solo & Ensemble Festival, WGI World Championships, and Bands of America Competitions; many of my students have also earned contracts with World Class DCI and WGI groups.

As I mentioned before, I have always loved teaching. If my profile piqued your interest, send me a message with any questions you may have. I look forward to working with you!

Joseph Lyons is an excellent instructor who is very to the point in his teaching but he definitely ensures that you will improve. I've taken lessons from him for many years on both saxophone and mellophone and he has helped me develop and improve in my music journey immensely! I would highly recommend lessons from him to anyone as myself and other students of his that I know have improved lots from his teachings.
