M.M. Bassoon Performance

    Learn the bassoon in easy steps from a bassoon performing artist.

    I'm engaged with the process of teaching bassoon students from the beginner level up to the advanced level. I make sure to make them aware of the importance of proper cleaning and care for their bassoons. I'm a patient teacher and know that everyone learns differently and at different speeds. I like to play duets with the students to make the lessons fun. I'm knowledgeable about bassoon solo pieces and orchestral repertoire and am able to help to help students prepare for solo contests. I emphasize the development of technique through slow scales and gradually expand the range. I'm able to add a little humor in the lessons to make the lessons fun. I view myself as a student in the process of teaching, too. I'm also engaged with teaching students proper embouchure, breath support and talk to them about reeds and am able to teach them reed making and adjustment as they become more advanced. In addition to bassoon I have experience playing Bb Clarinet and am able to offer beginner instruction for beginner clarinet students. I can work with them on embouchure, tuning, breath support, articulation, fingerings, technique, proper cleaning and knowing the names of the parts of the instrument. We could also work on beginner music from method books and get used to playing a wind instrument for the first time.

    My name is Joseph and I'm a professional bassoonist from Oregon. I have a B.M. in Bassoon Performance from the University of Oregon studying with Dr. Steve Vacchi and a M.M. in Bassoon Performance from Indiana University Bloomington studying with William Ludwig. I've been playing bassoon in professional orchestras in Oregon for years now. I play second bassoon with Oregon Mozart Players, principal bassoon with Eugene Concert Choir and also perform with Portland Columbia Symphony and Vancouver Symphony. I've also performed with Oregon Symphony, Oregon Ballet Theatre, Eugene Symphony and other groups in Oregon. I have experience teaching students right when they begin and students with a few years experience. I enjoy the teaching process and am committed to the growth of bassoon students that work with me. Everyone learns differently and I want to find the learning approach that works best for individual students. I like to play duets with students and work on solo pieces to prepare for solo contests. I emphasize the development of technique and proper embouchure and breath support. I'm a patient teacher and try to make the lessons fun and productive. Playing the bassoon should be fun and I want to make learning the bassoon an enjoyable experience because it's a very difficult instrument to learn and requires a lot of patience, dedication and practice to master. It's an instrument that is enriching for your life. In addition to bassoon I have experience playing Bb clarinet and am able to offer beginner instruction for beginner Bb clarinet students.
