As a violin and viola teacher, I provide a safe, positive, and nurturing environment for my students to learn. I want them to feel motivated and inspired, so they will grow up valuing music and appreciating the fine arts. My hope is that as active lifelong listeners and participants, they will continue to challenge themselves and be an inspiration to others.

My teaching philosophy embraces the ideas and principles I received from my own teachers that still guide me as a musician today. I believe that through practice and hard work, each student can succeed and have a sense of purpose and pride. I find that teaching always proves to be a mutually enriching experience between teacher, student, and parent.

My essential goal is to bring each student to their full potential by equipping them with valuable tools such as techniques, exercises, musical phrasing, and interpretations, allowing them to find their own musical voice. Teaching, for me, is a constant endeavor of finding what works best for each student, what might work for one student may not be the best for another.

I strive to include the importance of learning by doing, always being aware that some students respond best to descriptions and visualizations of an idea, and others, through imitation and repetition. I consider each student special with their own unique backgrounds and goals and I am committed to helping them reach their highest playing ability. It is my hope that my students will learn the satisfaction of being able to express themselves musically. I believe that learning music, and becoming skilled at it, facilitates future endeavors, and personal growth.

I not only studied Suzuki pedagogy, but I was a Suzuki student myself from a young age. It was through this style, that I found his philosophy of music building sensitivity, discipline, and endurance true. Therefore, I believe the ultimate importance of musical training is developing a beautiful heart.

About Joseph D.

As a professional violinist, I graduated from The Hartt School with my Bachelor of Music degree, and received my Master of Music degree from Temple University. I have studied violin and viola with Hirono Oka, Ana Tsinadze, Anton Miller, and Robert dePasquale, and have had lessons with Barbara Gavotos, William dePasquale, and Gregory Fulkerson. I am a certified Suzuki teacher, having trained through books 1-3, 5-7 with James Hutchins, Kirsten Marshall, Christie Felsing, and Martha Shackford. I have played with the Northern Tier Symphony Orchestra, Saint David’s Symphony Orchestra, and other orchestras, held principle positions with the Temple University Orchestra, and have toured Peru with Instrumentos de Albanza. I have interned with the Hartford Symphony Orchestra, and served as a management assistant with the Ambler Academy of Music. Currently, I am an artist-lecturer in Suzuki violin at Moravian College, and regularly perform with the Doucette Quartet. My background as an orchestra member, chamber musician, and freelancer, has shown me how important it is to teach and share the music that I love with my students. I believe that with motivation, encouragement, and exposure to fine music, any child can learn the skills and patience it takes to study a string instrument.

Our hope is to develop people with a good heart, through a positive environment of music learning. GPSA strives to enrich the lives of children through the Suzuki approach to music instruction. The Suzuki philosophy is based on creating a positive environment through which children can learn. This requires strong emphasis on the involvement of the family and learning in a combination of private and group settings. Positive encouragement, step-by-step improvement, development of strong listening and memory skills, and building upon learned repertoire are cornerstones of the philosophy. We strive to keep raising the quality of Suzuki music teaching and the quality of children's abilities. Teacher workshops, master classes, informal sharing of ideas, access to videos and teaching information, and assistance through the Suzuki Association of the Americas help teachers improve their teaching skills. Students participate in a variety of activities with others from a wide geographical area in events which motivate interest and raise musical standards.
