I have BM and MM degrees in clarinet performance from The Juilliard School. I've taught clarinet on the faculties of the Peabody Preparatory School, University of California at Santa Barbara, and am currently professor of clarinet at Chabot College. I have extensive experience performing as a soloist.
I took lessons with Joe for 5-6 years throughout middle and high school, and looking back it was one biggest gifts I've had in my life. He is a phenomenal musician, teacher, and mentor, and I cannot recommend him enough for anyone.
With Joe, I learned from the very fundamentals of clarinet technique, to the musicality and sensitivity of making beautiful music. And throughout our lessons, Joe was both demanding in his standards and extremely patient in helping me learn and master difficult pieces. With Joe, I was able to audition and be selected for multiple state and national honors band programs, and even select music programs for college.
Beyond teaching me how to play the clarinet (and play it really well!), Joe also taught me to truly appreciate music - a gift I will have for the rest of my life. And he also taught me the value of diligence and hard work - practice really does make perfect. Little did my teenage self know then, but the weekly clarinet lessons I took with Joe became lessons for rest of my life. Thank you, Joe!
Joe has inspired me to continue playing, even as an octogenarian. He has been extremely helpful with all aspects of clarinet playing. HIs own performance skill is the best I have encountered in the Bay Area. He is selfless in helping his young students succeed. Many have won competitions and been accepted to prestigious institutions because of his tutoring and encouragement. It is a joy to hear him play and a privilege to be one of his students.+ Read More
I began taking lessons from Joe 5 years ago when I retired. I had played in various groups through my college years and was wanting to improve my skills and return to playing in local groups. Joe is a demanding and detail oriented teacher. He has particularly emphasized with me not just technique but musicality. He encourages his adult students to play in recitals. Joe is phenomenal clarinetist himself who solos with local groups. I recommend him highly.+ Read More
Joe was my clarinet teacher for 7 years. I started taking lessons from him after fifth grade and he's helped me improve as a musician so much and has taught me to really appreciate playing the clarinet! Joe is so generous with his time, resources, and advice and he really cares about each and every one of his students. He spends extra time reviewing our audition tapes and giving extra lessons when we needed addition help.+ Read More
Joe is the best instructor of my lifetime. I’ve taken lessons with Joe since I was 11, and he’s always emphasized on building the foundations. Every single lesson, he never missed basic warm-up exercises and trained me to repeat small chunks of any music piece at a slow pace until perfecting every bar. With his persistent coaching, he helped me become concert master in high school and make the top California All State Honor Bands all six years. I would never have had this much opportunity without his deep caring for his students’ success. There has never been a day I spent without having laughed or learnt something new with Joe. He truly raises the bar as a teacher, mentor, and especially as a friend.+ Read More
Hands down best instructor ever. Going to Joe's clarinet lessons was a significant part of my childhood. I've been his student since I was 9 years old, and I still continue to play clarinet as an undergraduate. His lessons go at an easy pace, but he always challenges and pushes his students to become better. He has made a lot of connections with organizations for young musicians, so he sets goals for his students to audition and get accepted into them. By doing this, I've met so many talented clarinetists who also take lessons from Joe. It's hard to not like his warm personality, and I haven't met a single person who had issues with him.+ Read More
Joe was my clarinet teacher for 7 or 8 years, and he was absolutely wonderful - so talented and knowledgable, but also a patient and kind mentor. He truly cares about his students and his passion for music is infectious. Joe is more than qualified as a clarinet teacher and knows exactly how to improve a student's technique. I have met many of his other students over the years and am confident that they would say the same things!+ Read More
