Out of all instruments, the sound of the violin is the closest to the human voice. Small wonder it is one of the oldest instruments still being played and it's tones can fit in to almost any style of music.
Learning the violin from me can include violin fundamentals such as bow use and finger placement, reading music notation, lead sheets, and playing by ear. All of these are skills that come into play at different times depending on what your goals are. A combination of these skills will give you a foundation of music knowledge that will serve you regardless of what style of music you want to play. Specific styles I've worked with are: Classical, Irish, Bluegrass, Rock and Symphonic Metal.
I tailor lessons to my students goals. I emphasize technique fundamentals, and help students apply the techniques they learn toward music they enjoy playing, or composing.
In addition to playing violin, I write and arrange music. My song "The Burning Plain" won a national award for songwriting. If writing songs is your goal I can help you apply music theory concepts is ways that will make your songs stand out.
Teaching classical and folk standards, modern originals, and violin technique to support a variety of play styles. Progressive and holistic approach to violin playing with note reading and music theory taught alongside as they come up.
Teaching technique and modern as well as classic repertoire to kids in one-on-one and group setting. Instruments include violin, guitar, and ukelele.

We had a bumpy start with Zachary's bus being very late, but Jon was very patient and they had a good lesson once Zack got home.
Jon was patient and kind and Kitty was happy when she came out.
Jon is a great instructor that has been working with my 14 year old son Logan. He already has Logan working on vibrato which Logan has been terrified to try. Logan becomes more confident in himself with each lesson. He is also great at keeping me informed of Logan's progress.
I have also brought my younger son Liam to a lesson. Loam is autistic. Jon was very understanding and patient with liam and has told me if Liam is ever interested in playing he would give him lessons. All in all I am very happy with Jon as a teacher and would reccomend him.
Awesome instructor, really know his stuff!
Jon is an excellent instructor who teaches music theory, technique in a fun way. He is very versatile in and knowledgeable about different music styles.
Jon is a great violin teacher! I wanted to pick the violin back up after nearly 20 years and he's helped me get back into the swing of things. He is enthusiastic and patient and keeps me motivated to practice. l feel I improve every week.
I highly recommend Jon to anyone who wants to get back into violin!
Jon is a wonderful teacher! I have been playing violin all my life but never learned theory. I told Jon what I wanted to learn, and every week he has something prepared that helps me learn just what I want. He is patient and encouraging. When I bring something in that I want to work on, not on his lesson plan, we spend time on that too. I am very pleased with my lessons with Jon. And he's nice, fun, and friendly.+ Read More
Jon is a wonderful violin teacher. As someone deep into my adulthood, who has wanted to take violin lessons my whole life, I finally embarked on this journey. I find Jon's style to be encouraging and supportive, while instructive and he clearly knows his stuff. Learning the violin is challenging and Jon makes it fun and breaks it down in a very accessible way.I have learned an enormous amount from him in a short time and have many "aha" moments as I learn to read the music and associate the sounds with the notes, which is something I did not know prior to my lessons with Jon.
If you are considering taking lessons with Jon, take the plunge. Believe me, you will benefit greatly from the experince.
Thank you Jon.
Jon is a pretty nice guy all the way around. He's patient, listens, and is able to explain music terms to me relating to the violin on a level I can understand. I have only had a few lessons with him, but already I have learned tons.
