    About john r.

Originally from San Diego, JP had his first introduction to music when his father brought home a harmonica for him at age 8. He learned "Old Susanna" by ear, and was hooked on music. He was playing trumpet by age 10, and guitar by 14. Early lessons were in rock and blues, and by age 15 JP was playing in local bars and clubs, opening for bands like Iron Butterfly, The Untouchables, Cake, and Switchfoot. In college at the University of California San Diego, JP earned a BA in Music, studying classical composition with Chinary Ung, and Robert Roger Reynolds. After college JP worked as a freelance musician in the San Diego area, playing in pits for San Diego Musical Theatre Company, Latin gigs with the Bi-National Mambo Orchestra, Operas in Tijuana, Jazz Festivals in Ensenada and San Diego, and a weekly jazz brunch. JP continued to freelance and teach private lessons while earning an MM in Jazz Studies at San Diego State in 2007. JP has taught Music in public schools since 2007, in both San Diego and Los Angeles County, and is a California Credentialed teacher. JP takes a "student-centered" approach to teaching and uses his varied background to help create a customized course that is just right for each student. *** Lesson Details *** JP has been teaching for 15 years to students aged 5 to 65, and is well versed in the styles of jazz, blues, rock, punk, folk, finger style, acoustic or electric. During his lessons, JP covers topics ranging from learning how to play starting from the basics, improving your technical chops, your ear, sight-reading, theoretical knowledge, and improvisation, as well as guitar maintenance, amplifiers, and effects. JP feels it's important to let the student's interest determine the direction of the lessons. The curriculum of each lesson is tailored to the student. He is also a very patient teacher and presents material in an easily digestible manner. *** Studio Equipment *** Garage studio or front room - guitars, bass, trumpet etc. *** Travel Equipment *** I expect students to provide their own instrument, and amplification if required for electric guitar. *** Specialties *** I teach all students to read music and approach and teach the ability to write music and improvise.
