You’ve surely heard the old refrain: “I took piano lessons as a kid, but I don’t play anymore.” That makes as much sense to me as saying, “I rode a bike as a kid but not now.” If learned properly, the piano can provide anyone with a lifetime of recreation and pleasure. Hi, my name is John, and I am an experienced pianist, educator and music journalist. I am the Nashville Scene’s classical music critic, and over the years I have written about music for The Washington Post and National Public Radio, among other places. I have also been an adjunct associate professor at Vanderbilt University’s Blair School of Music and teach privately in my own studio. I am a very patient and nurturing teacher, but I am also methodical, which is a huge benefit for my students. In short order, they all become comfortable and confident at the keyboard.
