Thanks so much for taking the time to inquire about studying music with me.
Music and studying music has always been a passionate experience for me. I have been so blessed with the teachers and fellow musicians in my life. You should realize that your study of music may start with me, but it will last your entire lifetime. I hope that all of your life you will have a rewarding relationship to music and the spirit of great sounds!
I have performed in great jazz clubs in New York, on Broadway, and performing arts centers across the country. I'm currently playing in many great performing ensembles. I have put out two CD's as a leader and played on multiple CD's for other artists.
It has been my pleasure to teach privately, as well as in the classroom for 15 years. I enjoy performing many different types of music. I pride myself on being very open minded in terms of musical taste. Never apologize for liking what you like! I bet there is something in that music which is great. I can't wait to learn something from the music you introduce to me.
I be glad to provide a full resume to anyone who requests it.
*** Lesson Details ***
My most important goal for each student is that they get to where they want to be musically.
I want the student to be able to play the way he or she wants to play. If you want to learn to play one song, that is great! If you want to learn to play one classical etude that is just as great! If you want to learn how to play in a salsa band, bravo! I treat the desires of my students as my curriculum. Each student will receive special prep time from me each week. I pride myself in taking the time and energy to prepare for each meeting. Every time you complete a lesson, it is my hope that you are walking away as a better musician.
In the beginning I hope to find what will musically interests you the most. Usually, you might have a goal that requires you to play on a higher level than you do presently. If that is true, we might take some time to figure out a road map to get you to that place. Along the way, I'm sure you and I will learn many new concepts and techniques that aid you in becoming the bassist/musician you want to be.
And rest assured, the teacher always learns from the student...this is the best part of teaching: learning from the student.

*** Specialties ***
I have been lucky to play tons of different types of music. I believe I can give musicians and aspiring musicians a deep understanding of what is most important in many different styles of music. Music I have been lucky enough to study and play professionally: Jazz, Rock, Funk, Afro-Cuban, Brazilian, Blues, Classical, Pop.
I'm also a very good transcriber, so if there is a song you heard on the radio we can definitely play it! Ear training could be an area in which I could be of service to you as well.
I have many arranging and composing credits and I would be glad to help students in this area whenever requested.
I teach classes in guitar, bass and basic musicianship.

John is good teacher, I completely satisfied.
Very comfortable atmosphere. John asked my son what his goals were and tgen taylored instruction to help him meet those goals..We were very pleased! We highly recommend him.
Mr Lang is great guitar tutor.
Love my lessons
John is an amazing teacher all around. Very professional and good at getting me to understand things which may be a bit confusing. I am currently reading and playing between four books and I never thought it would be possible especially just after taking lessons for a year. Sometimes I feel a bit frustraited when I am not able to play certain pieces or when I dont understand a concept but John is great at breaking everything down and making it easier. I am now realizing how my piano skills can be utilizied in my other music projects. When I attend my lessons I am reminded why I love having them so much. With him as my instructor I can see my skills improving and I know I will only get better. I recommend piano lessons to everyone and if you are looking to have a great teacher John is your go to person !
John is a very patient piano teacher. He has a way to get young students to pay attention through the entire lesson. Keep up the good work !
Felt like an afterthought...
I could tell John was very into music, but not a strong ukulele instructor. He might be a wonderful guitar teacher or for other instruments, judging from the other reviews. My experience was that he did not send the lesson plans in a timely fashion, and was not fully present while we were in our lesson. Often he would spend time "trying to figure it out" on the uke rather than be teaching me something. He insisted on playing elaborate harmonies, while I strummed basic ones and would get lost in playing rather than paying attention to how well or not well I was playing. It felt more like an opportunity to jam out rather than teach at times. When a lesson is 30 minutes long structure is very helpful. I also felt like he had no idea what he had already taught me week after week, so a lot of lessons were repeated. To be completely honest, I started to feel like I would rather be somewhere else than learning an instrument, which is sad b/c I am very excited about learning. Again from the reviews he sounds like an incredible guitar teacher, so I would say that it's possible he was not as interested in uke teaching, but may be an amazing teacher for other instruments.
Helpful and encouraging
John is an excellent teacher. He is patient and very helpful with personal challenges. I am new to the ukulele and felt comfortable with John's teaching style. He tailors his lessons to meet your needs and ultimate goals with learning an instrument!
Enthusiastic, talented instructor
Iâve been taking lessons with John now for close to 4 months. Prior to Take Lessons I tried to teach myself to play (no luck) and had tried one on one lessons through Groupon, which were also not helpful or successful.
Right from the start, I enjoyed my lessons with John very much. He is enthusiastic, has a very positive, encouraging vibe, and has been more than willing to work with me at my skill level (basic guitar). I especially liked that he asked me to provide him with some music that reflected the style of guitar I wanted to learn to play. Once we laid some basic groundwork, we started off learning to play a song on the list I gave him. He is very talented at transcribing music by ear was able to guide me though the song without sheet music.
Finally, my schedule has been variable over the last few months, but he has been nothing but flexible and gracious in finding time for our lesson when I canât make our regular scheduled time. I very much appreciate that about him.
Overall, I would recommend John for lesson without hesitation. Heâs a talented musician and a gifted instructor.
Superb instructor, A+ all the way
John really knows his stuff! His interpersonal skills coupled with his musical ability are largely responsible for the progress I've made over the piano over the past month. I recommend him unreservedly.
he is patient easy to understand, and knows how to work with my level of skill
John is a great instructor. He is easy going and has a lot of patience.
John figured out the best way for me to learnwhen I was having a problem getting it.The more I practice the better I get.
John has a very thorough yet enjoyable teaching style. I look forward to more classes with him in the future.
Feedback & Thanks
I was so happy to find John through Take Lessons. John is a patient, nurturing and skilled instructor. Although it has only been 3 lessons, his teaching method is definitely conducive to my learning style. I really enjoyed learning the basics of the ukulele especially with his accompaniment on his electric guitar. As a teacher he invites the student to a duet of learning - it makes learning a new instrument exciting and not intimidating or daunting. Our lessons are organic and super chill - like a fun jam session integrating technique and musicality. His affirmation on my progress has helped me gain confidence in how I continue to learn the ukulele.John creates an easy-going atmosphere in our lesson and it definitely relieves any stress or pressure I may put on myself as a student. He's knowledgeable and enthusiastic about music and I have enjoyed learning from him.I plan to continue lessons with John when my work schedule is more consistent. Thanks so much for a great start on the uke John!Warm regards,Debralee
John is AWESOME
He really is. I only had 5 lessons but am now able to play the song I wanted to. And I never even held a ukelele before! He is super patient and calm, and answers even the stupidest questions. And he has so much confidence in your playing ability even when you don't, that you start to believe it! THANKS JOHN!
