    About John J.

    John is a university-trained and award-wining musician who began playing the guitar at the age of 13. He has studied the guitar as a primary focus in college since he was accepted to the University of Georgia in 2006. At UGA, he graduated Magna Cum Laude earning both a Bachelor's and Master's Degree in Guitar Performance as a student of renowned classical guitarist and educator John Sutherland. Furthermore, he studied jazz theory and improvisation with Steve Dancz, the Director of Jazz Studies at UGA. John has a wide range of field experience as a professional guitarist - he has worked as house guitarist for The Iron Grill and Truffles Grill Restaurants, played guitar for the Gainesville Theater Alliance's production of Children of Eden, and performed with multiple symphony orchestras, choirs, jazz and rock groups, and chamber ensembles. He has premiered several new works written for the guitar, and provided music for a variety of events and venues including weddings, corporate events, parties, church services, restaurants, hotels, and jazz bars. Mr. J's awards include wining first place, outstanding performer, and convention recitalist in the 2013 GMTA Competition, as well as first prize in the Ira E. Mashburn Competition for New and Electronic Music in 2006.  He has participated in masterclasses with many famous musicians including Christopher Parkening, Pepe Romero, Sharon Isbin, Wycliffe Gordon, Marcus Pintrup of The Lincoln Center Jazz band, and the Tokyo String Quartet.  Mr. J. also teaches private and class guitar lessons, performs recitals, and holds masterclasses in concert halls and universities across the southeastern United States.  *** Lesson Details *** I have dedicated my professional life to studying, teaching, and performing music on the guitar in a wide variety of styles and settings.My studio has a wide range of students from beginners to advanced, covering all ages and backgrounds.My students are provided with a well-rounded musical foundation from which they can develop their own musical personalities in an encouraging and comfortable environment.I tailor each of my lessons to meet the musical goals of the individual student, using their favorite musical genres as a platform from which to learn.Learn practical music theory, how to read sheet music, tablature, and chord charts, ear training, improvisation, and your favorite songs while gaining technical ability on the guitar.Any type of guitar is welcome, I am well versed in teaching both pick and fingerstyle guitar across all the major genres including: classical, jazz, rock, metal, blues, pop, and folk. *** Studio Equipment *** music stands, guitar amplifier, proper chairs for guitarists, computer/speakers for any audio and video examples   *** Travel Equipment *** I bring my own guitar, method book, writing utensils, and tuning device. I expect my students to have access to a music stand, proper chair, playable instrument, amplifier if applicable, and their own copy of the method book we are using to practice with. *** Specialties *** I specialize in teaching classical, jazz, rock, blues, pop, and folk guitar, as well as the music theory that goes with each style. I am very proficient in teaching and performing finger style and pick style on acoustic and electric instruments. I always include relevant music theory in my lessons, and teach my students how to read standard notation, as well as tablature and chord symbols/charts.
